I Looked Into Okuchichibu Arakawa Yatsugawakan
2026-08-29

In my Komorin's Fantasy Travel series, I keep researching hot spring ryokans and campsites that seem reachable without a car, in my own way. This time makes it quite a few inns I've looked into in the Chichibu area now.
This time I looked into "Okuchichibu Arakawa Yatsugawakan." I came across information about their prized private open-air bath, and while imagining a relaxing staycation along the gorge, I got curious and decided to look into it.
The in-room dining plan with an unlimited-use private open-air bath (whenever it's available) seems to be this inn's biggest draw.
As for the Rakuten Mobile signal conditions, I'll be honest that the official tool's measurement came back as a C rating.
I've summarized the details below.
What Kind of Place Is Yatsugawakan?
It's a hot spring ryokan located in the Shirokyu area of Arakawa, Chichibu City, Saitama Prefecture, and it seems to be characterized by its quiet location along a gorge. It's apparently about a 15-minute walk from Shirokyu Station on the Chichibu Railway, or just a few minutes by car, and it seems you can arrange a free shuttle after arriving at the station. It's also about 5 minutes by car from Mitsumineguchi Station, so it gave me the impression that it's surprisingly accessible even by train.
Check-in is apparently from 3:00 PM (last check-in at 6:00 PM), and check-out is by 10:00 AM. The room rate with two meals included is said to run roughly 18,500 to 24,000 yen per adult per night (varying by number of guests, room type, season, and plan), and a separate bathing tax of 150 yen is apparently required on-site. Reservations seem to be available through the official website as well as various booking sites such as Rakuten Travel, and it also seems possible to book by phone.

Having a shuttle from the station is a pretty appealing point for someone like me who doesn't drive. Just being along a gorge already makes me want to go.
Seems to Boast Private Open-Air Baths and Its Own Hot Spring Source
The water quality is apparently an alkaline cold mineral spring containing metaboric acid, offered as the heated, recirculated "Shirokyu Onsen." It seems this hot spring used to be introduced under a different name tied to the Yatsugawa area as well, which might just be an alternate name derived from the location or the facility itself — the name is written slightly differently across sources.
- Large communal bath / open-air bath: apparently located within the main building
- Private baths: There are private baths with their own open-air tubs, nicknamed "Camellia" and "Karin," which seem to be usable for free, as many times as you like, whenever they're available
- Wi-Fi: Wireless internet is apparently available both in the common areas and in the guest rooms
- In-house facilities: There's a banquet hall, a meeting room, a gift shop, and vending machines, and it seems the entire building is non-smoking, with free parking for roughly 30 to 50 cars
Being able to use the private baths an unlimited number of times seems like it would suit indoor types pretty well — people who want to relax without worrying about crowds.
An Inn Built for a Relaxing Staycation with In-Room Dining
The guest rooms are mainly Japanese-style, with roughly 10 to 13 rooms total (though even the official website itself seems to show some variation in the listed number). There's also apparently a special room type with its own open-air bath, referred to as the "Ryokusuitei," so if you choose carefully, you might be able to enjoy a bathing experience separate from the private baths as well.
Meals are apparently served mainly in-room for both breakfast and dinner, though a private dining room may be used in some cases. Nearby there's Houn-ji Temple (the 30th temple on the Chichibu pilgrimage), the Arakawa Hino lotus garden, the Mitsuzuchi Icicles, and the Michi-no-Eki Arakawa roadside station, so if you have a car, it seems like a spot where you could extend your trip a bit and combine it with some sightseeing.
Rakuten Mobile Signal Conditions
When I checked this facility's location using the official "My Area Network Simulation" tool, the overall rating came back as a "C."
Given that it's located along a gorge, the signal environment doesn't seem to have much room to spare, based on this rating. If you have plans that rely on connectivity during your stay, it might be reassuring to prepare an alternative means of communication with this rating in mind.

A C rating is a result I just have to accept honestly. I guess it's hard to have both a quiet setting along a gorge and good signal at the same time.
Wrapping Up
To sum it up again, Okuchichibu Arakawa Yatsugawakan gave me the impression of being a quiet in-room dining ryokan along a gorge where you can enjoy the private open-air bath for free, as many times as you like. Since there seems to be a shuttle from the station, it also felt like an inn that would be easy to choose for people who want to head there without a car.
On the other hand, the Rakuten Mobile signal conditions came back as a C rating, so if connectivity during your stay matters to you, it might be reassuring to check in advance using the official Rakuten Mobile tool if it's a concern.
