I Looked Into Kyu-Karuizawa Hotel Shinonome
2026-10-02

I've been looking into places that seem reachable without a car, like campsites, day-trip hot springs, and inns, and I've been turning it into a bit of a series.
This time I looked into Kyu-Karuizawa Hotel Shinonome. I have a driver's license, but I don't actually drive (I'm a paper driver), so a resort hotel within walking distance of a station caught my eye, and I went through the information one piece at a time.
It's a small hotel with 18 rooms in a villa area, a 9-minute walk from Karuizawa Station, and what caught my attention is that it looks easy to get to even without a car.
For Rakuten Mobile, the official tool gave an overall rating of "AAA."
I've put the details below.
What Kind of Place Is Kyu-Karuizawa Hotel Shinonome?
It's a resort hotel with 18 rooms in the town of Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture. The official website says it's in a quiet villa area, a 9-minute walk from Karuizawa Station. The capacity is apparently 44 guests, so my impression was of a cozy little inn rather than a large-scale resort hotel.
Based on what the official website says, I put together the basic information below.
- Number of rooms: 18 (apparently with a capacity of 44 guests)
- Room types: It seems there are twin rooms and family rooms. The specs section says "All rooms are Western-style twin rooms" and "Capacity: 2 guests or more per room"
- Check-in / check-out: Check-in starts at 15:00 (last check-in 22:00), and check-out is at 10:00
- Parking: 12 spaces, apparently free of charge
- Booking: There seems to be a booking button on the official website, but I couldn't check the details of where the link goes
- Rates: The accommodation rates didn't seem to be listed on the official website
As for costs, it seems an accommodation tax will be charged separately starting June 1, 2026. Per person per night, it looks like it's 200 yen if the room rate is 6,000 yen or more but under 10,000 yen, 250 yen if it's 10,000 yen or more but under 100,000 yen, and 700 yen if it's 100,000 yen or more. If you're thinking of staying, it seems safest to check the latest rates and conditions on the official website.

A 9-minute walk from the station feels like a really helpful condition for someone like me who doesn't drive. The room rates weren't listed, so that's something I'd need to check separately.
Checking Out the Rooms and Restaurant as an Indoor Person
Every room seems to have a bath and toilet (with a bidet seat), plus a TV and heating and cooling. The listed amenities were bath towels, toothbrushes, razors, shampoo, and conditioner.
There was one thing about the fridge that made me stop and think. The facilities page lists it as an amenity, but the guest room page says "No refrigerator, tea set, kettle, or kitchen," so the pages seem to contradict each other. If you want to keep drinks cold, it would probably be a good idea to check in advance.
I couldn't find any mention of shared bathing facilities such as a large communal bath. Since each room has its own bath, the style might basically be to relax in your room. As far as I could tell, there was also no information on Wi-Fi or whether pets are allowed.
The restaurant is reservation-only, and it's apparently closed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. For Golden Week, summer, and the year-end and New Year period, it seems you need to inquire. The reservation deadlines are apparently 17:00 the day before for breakfast and 17:00 two days before for dinner. There seemed to be a note saying you can also reserve by phone, but I couldn't confirm serving hours, the menu, or prices.
As for the space itself, it's described as having the warmth of wood and high ceilings, with a fireplace in winter. As an indoor person, it gave me the feeling that I could spend a calm time inside even on a day with bad weather.
Also, regarding the view from the windows, the official website has a note saying that because the hotel sits between a villa area and a commercial area, "the location is not very good." If the view matters to you, it's probably worth keeping that in mind beforehand.
Nearby Spots You Can Probably Walk To Without a Car
For access, the official website only says "9-minute walk from Karuizawa Station," and I couldn't find anything about cars, buses, or a shuttle service. If you're hoping for a shuttle, it looks like you'd need to ask in advance.
The official page on nearby sightseeing also lists estimated walking times.
- Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza: 15 min on foot (3 min by car)
- Kumoba Pond: 20 min on foot (4 min by car)
- St. Paul's Church: 20 min on foot (3 min by car)
- Whispering Path: 20 min on foot (4 min by car)
- Shaw Memorial Chapel: 25 min on foot (5 min by car)
- Old Mikasa Hotel: 35 min on foot (7 min by car)
- Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza: 20 min on foot (4 min by car)
- Shiozawa Lake Taliesin: 20 min by car
- Shiraito Falls: 25 min by car
Places like Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza and Kumoba Pond seem to be within walking distance, so I got the impression you could enjoy strolling around even without a car. On the other hand, only driving times were listed for Shiozawa Lake Taliesin and Shiraito Falls, so if you want to go there, you'd need to think about another way to get around.
Rakuten Mobile Signal Conditions
I entered this hotel's location into the official "my Area Connectivity Simulation" to check. When I ran it on October 2, 2026, the overall rating came back as "AAA."
This result is the rating the official tool actually returned. That said, it doesn't tell me how well the signal comes through in specific spots, like inside a guest room or deep inside the building. If you're curious, please try the official Rakuten Mobile "my Area Connectivity Simulation" yourself too.

As a Rakuten Mobile user, I was relieved to see an AAA rating. This looks like the kind of inn where I'd spend a lot of time holed up in my room, so it's nice not to have to worry much about the signal.
Wrapping Up
To sum it up, my impression of Kyu-Karuizawa Hotel Shinonome is that it's a small hotel with 18 rooms in a villa area, a 9-minute walk from Karuizawa Station, and an inn that caught my attention because it looks easy to get to even without a car.
It seems you can also walk to places like Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza and Kumoba Pond, so it felt like an easy option to consider even for someone like me who doesn't drive. On the other hand, there were things I couldn't confirm or that were inconsistent between pages, such as the room rates, the meal details, whether there's a large communal bath, Wi-Fi, and how the fridge is handled. The official website also has a note about the view from the windows. If you're interested, I think it's safest to check the latest information on the official website before booking.
As for the Rakuten Mobile signal, the official tool's rating was "AAA." If you're worried, please check with the official tool yourself too.
