I Looked Into RV Park Smart Nagatoro

This blog has mainly been about researching campsites and day-trip hot springs, but this time I picked up a facility with a bit of a different vibe.

This time I looked into "RV Park Smart Nagatoro." Since I don't own a car, it seemed like a facility that wouldn't have much to do with me, but its name kept coming up as a spot for photographing steam locomotives, so I got curious about what kind of place it actually is and decided to look into it.

The Short Version

It looks like a fully unmanned, plot-based facility for car camping and RV users, where you can check in with just a QR code.
As for Rakuten Mobile signal, the official tool didn't give a determination, so this time the result came out as unknown.

I've summarized the details below.

What Kind of Facility Is "The River and Steam Locomotive Village"?

Apparently, RV Park Smart Nagatoro is a plot-based facility for car camping and RV users located in Nagatoro Town, Chichibu District, Saitama Prefecture. It seems a local transport company opened the place by making use of a materials storage yard, combining it with an unmanned car-camping system that operates nationwide.

What struck me as the most distinctive feature was that check-in is completed entirely online. Once you finish making a reservation online, a QR code is issued, and apparently all you need to do is hold it up to a reader in front of the car gate at the entrance to get in. There's no physical key handover or face-to-face procedure, and it seems you can go in and out as many times as you like within your usage period. Reservations can only be made online, not by phone, though it seems you can still call to ask questions about the facility or the location itself.

Check-in is apparently between 1:00 PM and 11:00 PM, and check-out is by noon the next day, with same-day reservations accepted up until 11:00 PM if space is available. There are eight plots in total, and it seems the rates differ slightly between the large plots and the standard plots, though the wording seems to vary a bit depending on the official source, so I'd suggest confirming the details on-site or at the time of booking if you're considering using this place.

The Location as a Steam Locomotive Photography Spot Caught My Interest

The facility's location seems to be in the area between Higuchi Station and Nogami Station on the Chichibu Railway, and I came across information suggesting it's a spot where you can photograph trains, including the "SL Paleo Express," which runs on weekends and holidays. However, this isn't information listed directly on the official site but something I found through general research, so it's probably best to take it with a grain of salt. I also saw some reviews mentioning that the sound and vibration of passing trains can be noticeable, but I'll treat that as unconfirmed hearsay as well.

Checking Out the Facilities as Someone Who's More of an Indoor Type

This isn't a facility I'd likely have much occasion to use directly since I don't own a car, but I looked into the amenities anyway.

  • Power: All eight plots have power outlets, apparently supporting AC 100V up to a maximum of 1,500W. If the breaker trips, it seems you can reset it using a recovery switch
  • Water & Dump Station: There's a water spot for washing dishes (cold water only), and next to the restroom there's also a dump station that handles both black water and gray water
  • Restrooms: These are trailer-house style, Western-style, separated by gender, equipped with washlets and air conditioning, and available 24 hours a day
  • Bathing Facilities: There are none on-site; the guidance is apparently to use nearby day-trip hot springs instead
  • Wi-Fi: According to the facility information, it seems to be available free of charge
  • Bonfires & BBQ: If you use a fire pit and a fireproof sheet, it's apparently usable until 10:00 PM, and firewood is also sold on-site
  • Dog Run: There's a fenced-in space you can use for free, and it seems dogs are allowed on a leash. I couldn't find detailed information on the official site about the size of the dog run or exactly how leashes are handled, so that part remains a bit unclear

The unmanned system where you can enter just with a QR code kind of reminds me of self-check-in at a hotel. I probably won't get the chance to use it since I don't drive, but I find the system itself pretty interesting.

Rakuten Mobile Signal Conditions

I checked using the official "My Area Connectivity Simulation" tool by entering an address close to the facility's location.

This time, no determination showed up at all, and instead I got a message saying something like "temporarily under maintenance." This might be the message that appears when there's no data prepared for the address in question, but as a result, the overall determination this time seems to come out as unknown. In short, I couldn't get a result that clearly says either good or bad.

It was a bit disappointing not to get a clear determination, but I try to report results like this honestly, just as they are. If you use Rakuten Mobile, I think it'd be reassuring to check for yourself before heading out.

Nearby Sightseeing and Hot Spring Spots

Nearby, the Nagatoro Iwadatami rock formation and the Nagatoro Line River Boat Ride are apparently about 5 to 10 minutes away by car, and Hodosan Shrine and the Hodosan Ropeway are also about 10 minutes away by car. It also seems to be a location where you can enjoy activities like rafting and kayaking on the Arakawa River nearby.

Since there are no bathing facilities on-site, it looks like you'd need to use a nearby day-trip hot spring instead. Chichibu Onsen Manganno-yu and Tennen Jikagensen Seion-no-yu are both roughly 15 minutes away by car, and if you're willing to go a bit further, Kanna-no-yu in Kamikawa Town could also be an option. The roadside station Michi-no-Eki Minano is about 10 to 15 minutes away by car, and Michi-no-Eki Hanazono is about 20 minutes away. That said, I should add that this surrounding-area information comes from general research, and I wasn't able to confirm it directly on the official site.

Wrapping Up

To sum it all up, my impression was that RV Park Smart Nagatoro is a plot-based facility for car camping and RV users, distinguished by its fully unmanned check-in and its location as a steam locomotive photography spot.

This is a facility I probably won't get much chance to use directly since I don't own a car, but with things like the unmanned check-in system and the dog run, I felt it's a place with some thoughtful touches in its amenities. As for Rakuten Mobile signal conditions, no determination came up this time and the result was unknown, so if you're considering using this facility, it might be reassuring to check for yourself beforehand.
