I Looked Into Mampei Hotel
2026-08-27

This blog is where I quietly research campsites and lodging from the perspective of someone who doesn't own a car, but this time, as a "hotel-cation detour," I'm covering a facility with a slightly different vibe.
The trigger was Mampei Hotel, a name I kept seeing over and over while researching campsites around Karuizawa. Once I found out it seemed to be a long-established classic hotel, I figured I should look into it myself, so I put together my findings here.
My impression was of a long-established hotel with a history dating back to 1894, yet still within a distance you could reasonably reach by taxi or free shuttle bus from the station.
As for Rakuten Mobile signal conditions, the official tool gave it an AAA rating.
I've put together the details below.
A Long-Established Classic Hotel in Kyu-Karuizawa, Founded in 1894
According to its official website, Mampei Hotel was founded in 1894, and it appears to be a long-established classic hotel located in the Kyu-Karuizawa area. As I read through the materials, I got the sense that the building's long history and overall atmosphere are themselves a major part of the hotel's appeal.
Inside the hotel, there appear to be dining facilities such as a main dining room, a cafe terrace, a bar, and a Japanese restaurant called Hinoki, along with shops and venues for weddings, banquets, and conferences. I imagine this is a hotel that has been used not just for lodging but also as a venue for meals and events.
Checking the Key Basic Information
As for check-in and check-out, according to the accommodation terms, check-in is at 3 PM and check-out is at 11 AM the following morning. For multi-night stays, it seems guests can use the room all day except on the arrival and departure days. If you go over the checkout time, an extra 30% of the room rate is charged for up to 3 hours over, 50% for up to 6 hours over, and the full room rate beyond that—so if you're thinking about a late checkout, it's probably worth confirming in advance.
- Booking method: It looks like you go through the reservation link on the official website, which connects to an external booking system. Apparently you can also book by phone.
- Rates: The official website's text doesn't list specific prices—it seems you check plans and availability through the booking system instead.
- Parking: According to an announcement on the official website, paid parking for guests is scheduled to start on August 17, 2026. I couldn't confirm the specific fee.
There appear to be three types of guest wings: Alps Wing, Atago Wing, and Usui Wing, each with a different feel—classic, classic-modern, and a design that lets you feel closer to nature, respectively. Looking through the materials, I thought that which wing you stay in could really change your overall impression of the stay.

Having three types of guest wings to choose from sounds like it'd be fun just on its own. I'm the indoor type, so honestly just being able to relax in the room would already be enough to satisfy me.
Easy Access Even Without a Car
Since I have a license but don't actually drive, access methods are always something I pay close attention to. For Mampei Hotel, it's said to be about a 5-minute taxi ride (roughly 2 km) from Karuizawa Station, so it seems to be a relatively short distance.
By bullet train, it's apparently about 1 hour and 10 minutes from Tokyo to Karuizawa Station, and about 30 minutes from Nagano. On top of that, there's a free shuttle bus running between the south exit of Karuizawa Station and Mampei Hotel—though it requires advance reservation, I think that's a really helpful system for someone like me who doesn't own a car. If you're driving, it's about 20 minutes from the Usui-Karuizawa interchange on the Joshin-etsu Expressway if you're coming from the Tokyo direction, and about 30 minutes from the Komoro interchange via the Chuo, Nagano, and Joshin-etsu expressways if you're coming from the Nagoya direction.
Rakuten Mobile Signal Conditions
Since I normally use Rakuten Mobile, I always make a point of checking signal conditions whenever I look into a place to stay. When I checked this hotel's location using the official "My Area Connectivity Simulation" tool, the overall rating came back as "AAA."
I'm just reporting this as-is, based on what the official Rakuten Mobile tool showed. Given that AAA rating, it seems like connectivity should be fairly reliable even in this Kyu-Karuizawa location.

Seeing an AAA rating makes it a lot easier for me to recommend a place with confidence. If a historic hotel like this also seems to have solid connectivity, I'd almost want to put my phone away entirely during the stay and just relax.
Wrapping Up
Putting it all together, my overall impression of Mampei Hotel was of a long-established classic hotel with a history going back to 1894, yet with good access from the station and a shuttle bus service that makes it easy to visit even without a car. Having three types of guest wings to choose from, plus a good range of in-house facilities like restaurants and a bar, also seems to broaden the options for how you might spend your stay.
As for Rakuten Mobile signal conditions, the official tool showed an AAA rating, so I felt this is a place that's easy to picture in advance, connectivity included. If you're curious, it might be worth checking for yourself using the official Rakuten Mobile tool.
