I Looked Into Karuizawa Prince Hotel East
2026-10-06

I've been looking into places that seem doable without a car, like campsites, day-trip hot springs, and inns, as a kind of ongoing series.
This time I'm changing things up a bit and checking out Karuizawa Prince Hotel East as a "hocance" (hotel vacation) detour. A resort hotel within walking distance of the station seemed realistic even for someone like me who doesn't drive, and that's what got me curious.
It's a highland resort with an "Art Forest" concept, and at about a 10-minute walk from Karuizawa Station, it looks easy to get to even without a car.
As for Rakuten Mobile, the official tool rated the signal "C". If you want to use your phone during your stay, I'd recommend checking beforehand.
I've put the details below.
What Is This "Art Forest" Highland Resort Like?
It's a hotel in the town of Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture, and the concept is apparently "Into the Art Forest, to Soothe Your Everyday Life." It has a playful, art-inspired design, and rooms are art-themed twin rooms.
There are other hotels in the same Karuizawa area, like the West one, but East seems to be presented as its own separate hotel.
Here's the basic info, based on what I could see on the official website.
- Booking: You can search availability on the official site (entering dates, number of guests, and a promotion code), and it seems you can also book by phone. Checking, changing, and canceling a reservation can be done from a dedicated page.
- Transport bundles: Apparently you can book transportation together with your stay through the ANA, JAL, and JR East Dynamic Rail Pack.
- Rates: I couldn't find specific prices in the main text of the official page. Seibu Prince Global Rewards members are apparently guaranteed the best available rate.
- Kids' breakfast: Breakfast is free for children under 6.
- Check-in and check-out times: I couldn't find these in the main text of the official page either. It seems best to confirm when booking.

It was a little disappointing that I couldn't find the rates or check-in time on the official page. Checking on the booking screen seems like the surest way.
Checking Out Facilities That Look Good Even for Indoor Types
It was introduced as a highland resort where you can spend your time however you like, whether that's hot springs, shopping, or skiing. Apparently it's right next to a ski area and a shopping plaza, so it seems easy to get around even if you plan to head out of the hotel.
- Hot springs and spa: There's a natural hot spring called Forest Hot Spring and a spa called Spa The Forest Prince. There was a notice that the hot spring has reopened. I couldn't find details like the water quality.
- Dining: There's All Day Dining Karuizawa Grill, as well as a sukiyaki, shabu-shabu, and teppanyaki restaurant called Sofu Mori. Lunch at the teppanyaki restaurant Mori seems to be by reservation only, until 8:00 PM the day before.
- Sports: Apparently there are 2 outdoor and 1 indoor pickleball courts.
- Nature activities: It looks like they also offer nature experience programs.
- Nearby facilities: There's a ski area, a 9-hole golf course, and a 30-lane bowling alley.
- EV charging: There are 8 standard charging stations, apparently shared with The Prince Villa Karuizawa.
There were also a few things to keep in mind. Major renovation work is apparently underway in the cottage area from June 17, 2025 until May 2027 (planned), so there may be some noise around the area. Also, it seems the dog and cat cottages have moved to the West hotel. If you're traveling with pets, it seems wise to check ahead of time.
Easy to Reach Without a Car? I Checked the Access from the Station
This was the part I cared about most as someone who doesn't drive. The official website describes access from the south exit of Karuizawa Station like this.
- On foot: Exit from the south exit and walk through the Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza, which takes about 10 minutes.
- Pickup bus: A free bus departs from the south exit, running about every 30 minutes from 8:00 to 21:00. The interval seems to differ from noon to 13:30, and apparently it also varies by route and season. It loops around the hotels in the area, and you can get on and off anywhere. The specific timetable seems to be on the official pickup bus page.
- Taxi: About 2 minutes from the south exit. I couldn't find the fare.
- Information desk: There's a guest service center called Smile Concierge at the south exit. It's about a 2-minute walk to the shopping plaza.
You can walk, and there are also bus and taxi options, so it seemed easy to plan a trip even without a car. You can check the details on the official website.
Rakuten Mobile Signal Conditions
I checked this hotel's location in Karuizawa using the official "my Area Communication Simulation", and the overall rating came up as "C".
The rating made me feel it's something worth checking beforehand, so I'm writing it as it is. Signal conditions may also vary depending on your room or location, so if you want to watch videos or work on your phone during your stay, it might be reassuring to prepare in advance. If you're curious, please try the official Rakuten Mobile "my Area Communication Simulation" yourself too.

As a Rakuten Mobile user, a "C" rating is a bit of a concern. If I were going to use it for a hocance, I'd want to look into it beforehand.
Wrapping Up
To sum it up, my impression of Karuizawa Prince Hotel East is that it's a highland resort with an "Art Forest" concept, about a 10-minute walk from the station, and a hotel that looks easy to reach even without a car.
With hot springs, a spa, restaurants, pickleball, and more, it looks like you wouldn't run out of things to do even just inside the hotel, which is great for indoor types. On the other hand, the construction in the cottage area, and the fact that I couldn't confirm the rates or check-in time in the main text of the official page, are things I think you'd want to check before booking.
