Looking into Hoshinoya Karuizawa

I've been looking into campsites, day-trip hot springs, and inns that seem reachable without a car, but this time I'm changing things up a little and checking out a resort hotel, Hoshinoya Karuizawa.

I have a driver's license, but I'm a paper driver who never actually drives, and I'm an indoor type who prefers staying home to going out. Even so, apparently there's a free shuttle bus from the station, so I wanted to find out whether I could get there without a car.

The Short Version

It's a 77-room resort themed on a “valley village,” and since a free shuttle bus (reservation required) runs from Naka-Karuizawa Station, it seemed fairly easy to get to even without a car.
As for Rakuten Mobile signal, the official tool didn't show a result, so the overall rating was unknown.

I've put the details below.

What Is Hoshinoya Karuizawa, the Resort Themed on a “Valley Village”?

It's a resort in the Hoshino area of Karuizawa Town, Kitasaku District, Nagano Prefecture, and according to the official website, its theme is a “valley village.” It has 77 rooms in total, and apparently each room fits 1 to 4 guests.

Here's the basic information, as far as I could confirm on the official website.

  • Check-in/check-out: Check-in is at 3:00 PM and check-out is at 12:00 PM, apparently.
  • Price: I couldn't find any specific amounts in the official page text, and it seems the site says that searching for availability on the official website is the best deal.
  • How to book: It looks like you go through the availability search on the official website or the booking button on each room's page. Apparently there's also a phone line for inquiries.
  • Payment: Advance payment supports Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Diners Club, JCB, Paidy, and Eikyu Fumetsu Points, and it seems you can also choose installments or pay-later options. On-site payment is by cash or credit card, it seems.
  • Things to note: Apparently you can't change the number of guests after booking, and you can't request a specific room.

The official website is here.

Not seeing specific prices on the official page makes me a little nervous. I think it's best to look at the actual amounts in the availability search before deciding.

Checking the Rooms and Facilities as an Indoor Type

There seem to be three room types.

  • Water Wave Room: For 1 to 4 guests, 57 to 68 m², and apparently a type facing the river.
  • Mountain Alley Room: For 1 to 3 guests, 44 to 67 m², and it looks like a type overlooking a wild bird forest.
  • Garden Alley Room: For 1 to 3 guests, 48 to 81 m², and apparently a standalone-house type.

The rooms apparently come with a bed (200 × 105 cm), a separate bath, toilet, and washbasin, a toilet with a bidet function, a humidifying air purifier, a minibar, a safe, full blackout curtains, samue loungewear, and more. For an indoor type like me who wants to relax in the room, it felt like a reassuring lineup of equipment.

Wi-Fi is apparently free in all guest rooms and shared areas, so it seems easy to just stay holed up in your room and unwind.

The property apparently has 5 restaurants, 1 cafe/lounge, 1 spa, 1 kids' room, 2 hot springs, a pool, a bathing facility, and a meeting room. I couldn't find details such as the hot spring water quality or bathing hours on the official pages I checked.

There was also the following information.

  • Sharing a bed: Children under 12 can share a bed, up to the room's capacity, though meals and bedding aren't included, apparently.
  • Pets: Staying with a pet is possible, and apparently there are dedicated dog-friendly rooms. It seems up to 2 dogs per room is recommended.

Can I Get There Without a Car? Looking into the Free Shuttle Bus from Naka-Karuizawa Station

For a paper driver like me, access is naturally the big question. According to the official website, it takes about 80 minutes by Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Karuizawa Station, and about 30 minutes from Nagano Station.

From Karuizawa Station onward, there seem to be the following options.

  • Free shuttle bus: It runs from the south exit of Naka-Karuizawa Station on the Shinano Railway, and apparently you can use it at check-in and check-out. Seats are limited and advance reservation is required.
  • Karuizawa Station to Naka-Karuizawa Station: About 5 minutes on the Shinano Railway, apparently.
  • Taxi: It seems to take about 15 minutes from Karuizawa Station to the Hoshino area.
  • Local bus: Apparently about 20 minutes by Seibu Kanko Bus from Karuizawa Station to the Hoshino area.

On the other hand, I couldn't find the shuttle bus schedule, the walking time from the station, or taxi fares in what I checked. If I were going, I'd feel safer confirming those on the official website beforehand.

If you're going by car, the outdoor parking lot is apparently free and needs no reservation. EV charging is available 24 hours, and it seems there are three 200V/6kW chargers. You apply after booking a stay, and non-guests can use them if there's space, but guests get priority, apparently.

Rakuten Mobile Signal Conditions

I checked this facility's location (Karuizawa Town, Kitasaku District, Nagano Prefecture) with the official “my Area Communication Simulation,” but no rating was displayed, and I got a message along the lines of “Temporary maintenance is currently underway.”

So the overall Rakuten Mobile rating for this facility is unknown. I couldn't tell here whether the signal is good or unstable.

If you're curious, please check it yourself with Rakuten Mobile's official “my Area Communication Simulation.”

No signal rating came up this time, so I can't tell you anything definite. Still, the Wi-Fi inside the property is apparently free, so that might be a little reassuring.

Wrapping Up

To sum it up, my impression of Hoshinoya Karuizawa is that it's a 77-room resort themed on a “valley village,” and an inn that seems easy to reach even without a car if you use the free shuttle bus (reservation required) from Naka-Karuizawa Station.

There are three room types, the room equipment is well stocked, and it seems like a good fit for indoor types who want to relax in their rooms. It also looked like it has hot springs, a pool, restaurants, and more.

On the other hand, I couldn't confirm specific room rates, the shuttle bus schedule, or hot spring details. The Rakuten Mobile signal conditions also remain unknown because the official tool showed no rating. Before visiting, it might be reassuring to check the official website and the signal checking tool.
