I Looked Into KARUIZAWA CAMP GOLD

This series where I look into campgrounds, day-trip hot springs, and inns one by one and write them up has grown into quite a number of posts before I even realized it. This time I thought I'd look into the high-spec campground category.

The place I'm covering this time is "KARUIZAWA CAMP GOLD." I came across information saying the site types are divided pretty finely, and that power and Wi-Fi are available at almost every site, so as someone who's more of an indoor type, I got curious and decided to look into it.

The Short Version

There are apparently as many as six site types, and power and Wi-Fi seem to be available around the clock at most of them, so this looked like it could be a strong candidate for anyone who prioritizes facilities.
As for the Rakuten Mobile signal, the official tool didn't display a judgment result, so it ended up being unclear.

I've put together the details below.

What kind of place is KARUIZAWA CAMP GOLD?

It's apparently a campground located in the Hotchi area of Karuizawa Town, Kitasaku District, Nagano Prefecture. It seems the name was slightly different at some point in the past, but it's currently operating under the name KARUIZAWA CAMP GOLD.

The regular operating season apparently runs from March 15 to January 15 of the following year, with winter operations (excluding glamping) from January 15 to March 15. There also seem to be irregular closures, so when planning a visit, it's probably a good idea to check the latest closure dates on the booking site. Check-in is apparently at 2:00 PM and check-out at 11:00 AM.

As for pricing, much of it on the site is displayed as images, so I wasn't able to confirm specific unit prices. There's an explanation about a "per-person pricing system to maintain a quiet atmosphere," and it looks like a price revision is planned for April 1, 2026. Group use apparently requires individual consultation. Reservations are made by clicking the "Book Now" button on the official site, which leads to an external booking system, and it seems same-day phone reservations are possible for sauna-only use (though they may not be able to accommodate this during busy periods).

Having the prices shown as images was a bit frustrating for me since I couldn't pull out the actual numbers. Checking directly on the official site before booking seems like the safest bet.

Checking Out the Site Types and How Well-Equipped They Are

What stood out to me while researching was how many types of sites there are. Each one seems to differ slightly in plot size and facilities.

  • Auto sites (32 sites): The plots average 8.5m x 8.5m, and apparently one vehicle can be parked right next to each site. Power is available, Wi-Fi is on around the clock, and pets seem to be allowed under certain conditions.
  • Sky sites (9 sites): The plots average 9m x 9m, and it looks like this type also allows vehicles right next to the site, with power and Wi-Fi available.
  • View sites (5 sites): The plots average 9m x 9m excluding parking space, and power and Wi-Fi seem to be available here too.
  • Forest sites (10 sites): The plots are about 9m x 9m, but vehicles apparently can't be parked right next to the site, and there's no power hookup. Wi-Fi is apparently on around the clock though, and pets seem to be allowed.
  • Glamping sites (5 sites): The plots are 13m x 8m, and apparently come with permanently set up single beds, blankets, tarps, chairs, and tables. This seems well-suited for anyone who prioritizes comfort, though pets don't appear to be allowed.
  • Hill sites (4 sites): The plots average 9m x 9m, and it looks like vehicles right next to the site, power, and Wi-Fi are all available.

Shared facilities apparently include flush toilets, shower rooms, and AC power outlets, along with activity equipment like a slackline, trampoline, bouldering wall, stream fishing, and a sauna. For anyone who wants to go hands-free, a full lineup of rental gear seems to be available too, including tents, tarps, and bedding. Payment apparently accepts cash, bank transfer, and PayPay (I also spotted a credit card logo, but couldn't confirm the details).

By the way, when it comes to choosing a spot within a site, it seems you can make a request like "I'd like somewhere around here," but it's not guaranteed. This might be a common pattern at other high-spec campgrounds too.

Checking Whether You Can Get There Without a Car

Since I don't really drive myself, whether I can get somewhere without a car is always something I care about. From what I found, it's apparently about a 20-minute taxi ride from Karuizawa Station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, or about 10 minutes from Shinano-Oiwake Station on the Shinano Railway. There's also a loop bus running around Karuizawa Town, and if you get off at the "Hotchi Ichiba" bus stop, it's apparently about a 5-minute walk from there. As someone who doesn't drive, it was reassuring to learn there are options like the bus or a taxi from the station.

If you're driving, it's apparently about 20 minutes from the Usui-Karuizawa IC if coming from the Tokyo direction, or about 5 minutes after turning right at the Toriihara traffic light after heading up Route 18 if coming from the Nagano direction. It seems the location may not yet be registered in some car navigation systems, so the official site apparently recommends using Google Maps instead.

Rakuten Mobile Signal Conditions

Since I use Rakuten Mobile, checking this is something I never skip. When I entered the address corresponding to this facility's location into the official "My Area Network Simulation" tool, no judgment result came up, and instead I got a fallback message saying something like "currently undergoing temporary maintenance."

Because of that, this time I can't say whether the signal is "good" or "weak" — it just remains unclear for now. Since I'd rather not write based on guesswork, I'm sharing it as-is. If you're planning to actually visit, or want to be sure about signal conditions beforehand, it's probably worth trying the same address yourself on the official tool.

I think this is the first time I've seen a case where no result shows up at all. Situations like this really make me think that checking with your own phone on-site is the most reliable way to know for sure.

Wrapping Up

To sum it up again, KARUIZAWA CAMP GOLD left me with the impression of being a high-spec campground with a wide variety of site types, many of which offer power and Wi-Fi. With options ranging from auto sites to glamping, it seems like a solid choice for anyone camping with facilities as a top priority.

That said, some details — like the specific pricing and the number of restrooms or cooking areas — weren't fully clear from the official site, so those remain unconfirmed. Also, since no result came up for the Rakuten Mobile signal this time, I can't make any definitive claims there either. If you're planning an actual visit, it's probably a good idea to check the latest information on the official site while also verifying signal conditions beforehand for peace of mind.
