I Looked Into Hotel Maroad Karuizawa
2026-08-27

Besides campgrounds, another focus of this blog is looking into accommodations you can get to without a car. This time, instead of a campground, I put together a post as part of my "hotel getaway detour" category, enjoying Karuizawa with a hotel stay.
The reason I decided to look into Hotel Maroad Karuizawa this time is that its location within walking distance of Karuizawa Station caught my eye. Since I'm a driver in name only (I have a license but rarely drive), whether a place is walkable from the station or has a shuttle bus is always a pretty big point of interest for me.
The biggest feature seems to be its convenient access — about a 10-minute walk from Karuizawa Station, or about 3 minutes by free shuttle bus.
When I checked the Rakuten Mobile signal conditions using the official tool, it came back with a good result: an AAA rating.
I've summarized the details below.
A Hotel Near the Station with a Shuttle Bus — Looks Easy to Reach Without a Car
Hotel Maroad Karuizawa is apparently located in Karuizawa Town, Kitasaku District, Nagano Prefecture. It's said to be about a 10-minute walk from the nearest station, Karuizawa Station, or about 3 minutes by free shuttle bus, which felt like a grateful location for someone like me who doesn't own a car.
The official website also gives detailed directions for walking there: with your back to the station's north exit, turn right at the first traffic light, then left at the next one, and continue with Karuizawa Ohga Hall on your left until the hotel appears on your right. It felt like directions that would be easy to follow even if you're not used to reading maps.
The shuttle bus reportedly runs as needed between 9am and 6pm, but it seems you can't book it in advance — instead, you're supposed to call after arriving at the station to request it. That's probably something worth keeping in mind when actually using the service. During the winter season, it apparently also runs toward the Prince Ski Resort area.
In terms of access, taking the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station takes about 70 minutes, or about 30 minutes from Nagano Station. By highway bus, it takes about 170 minutes from Ikebukuro Station or about 190 minutes from Shibuya Station to reach Karuizawa Station, so it seems like it would be easy to plan a day trip or an overnight stay from central Tokyo. If driving, the route apparently goes via the Kan-etsu Expressway from Nerima IC to Usui-Karuizawa IC, followed by about 20 minutes on regular roads. There are 60 free parking spaces available, including room for 2 large buses.

Hearing that it's within walking distance of the station and also has a shuttle bus felt like a really reassuring combination for someone like me who has a license but doesn't drive. That said, the fact that you can't reserve the shuttle bus in advance is something I'd want to remember when actually using it.
Checking Out the Room Types and In-House Facilities
There are 41 rooms in total, divided into three types.
- Western-style rooms: About 33 square meters, capacity of 1–3 people, 16 rooms total. They have semi-double beds and can apparently also be used as triples.
- Japanese-Western style rooms: About 38 square meters, capacity of 2–5 people, 21 rooms total. In addition to two beds, there's apparently a tatami area where up to three futons can be laid out.
- Japanese-style rooms: 12-mat plus 6-mat rooms, capacity of 2–6 people, 4 rooms total. This is the traditional style with futons laid out on tatami, with fewer level changes, and it's described as suited for families with small children.
As for in-house facilities, Wi-Fi is apparently available, but the official website didn't specify details like whether it's free or paid, or which areas it covers. If that's something you're curious about, it might be worth asking when you make your reservation.
On the other hand, there's no elevator, and the building apparently has a lot of stairs and level changes, though staff will reportedly assist as needed. There's no smoking room. It seems to accept a wide range of credit cards and e-money — in addition to major cards like VISA, JCB, and American Express, e-money options like QUICPay and Suica are also accepted.
Check-in is from 3pm (last check-in at midnight), and check-out is at 11am. Specific room rates weren't listed in the main text of the official website; instead, you seem to need to enter your dates and number of guests into the reservation form to check pricing. Reservations can be made through the form on the official website or by phone. Cancellation fees are set at 20% of the room rate for the day before, 80% for the day of, and 100% for a no-show.
Rakuten Mobile Signal Conditions
When I checked this facility's location using the official "My Area Connectivity Simulation" tool, the overall rating came back as "AAA." That's what showed up on the tool published by the company.
I was a bit concerned since Karuizawa has a mountainous image, but based on the rating, it seems relatively easy to get a connection there. Actual experience can vary depending on your device and the time of day, so if you're concerned, it's probably a good idea to check the official Rakuten Mobile tool yourself.

Honestly, I was a bit braced for poor signal in Karuizawa, but seeing the AAA rating put me a little at ease. As a Rakuten Mobile user, getting a result like this makes it a lot easier to plan a trip.
Wrapping Up
To sum it up, my impression of Hotel Maroad Karuizawa is that it's a hotel that looks easy to reach even without a car, being about a 10-minute walk from Karuizawa Station and also offering a free shuttle bus. There are three room types — Western-style, Japanese-Western style, and Japanese-style — which also stood out as a feature that makes it easy to choose based on your family setup or preferences.
There were a few points worth checking in advance, like the lack of an elevator and the exact Wi-Fi details, but the convenient access — close to the station with a shuttle bus available — felt reassuring for someone like me who doesn't drive. The Rakuten Mobile signal also got an AAA rating, so including the connectivity side, this might be an easy one to add to your list of candidates to check out.
