I Looked Into Yamamizuki

This blog is where I keep endlessly researching hot spring inns and campgrounds, and I've gradually been covering facilities in the Kyushu area as well. Continuing that trend, this time I looked into Yamamizuki, an inn that often comes up as a standalone property representing Kurokawa Onsen.

Honestly, I'd never properly looked into Kurokawa Onsen itself, so my reasoning was pretty simple: start with the inn considered its representative property. I was also drawn to the idea of a standalone inn along a mountain stream.

The Short Version

My impression was of a calm, standalone inn along a mountain stream, offering a choice of 10 different room types.
As for Rakuten Mobile signal conditions, the official tool didn't display a result at all.

I've put together the details below.

What Kind of Place Is Yamamizuki?

It's apparently a standalone inn located in the Kurokawa Onsen area, in Minamioguni, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture. It's a long-established ryokan built along a mountain stream, and I saw it introduced as one of the inns representing Kurokawa Onsen.

It operates year-round, and I couldn't find any mention of closed days on the official site. I also couldn't find specific check-in or check-out times, so if you're considering staying there, it's probably worth confirming when you make your reservation.

Reservations can apparently be made through a booking site linked from the official website, or by phone (with reception hours reportedly from 11 AM to 8 PM). According to the official site for the Kurokawa Onsen Ryokan Cooperative, rates for one night with two meals, tax excluded, range from around 18,000 to 45,000 yen per person, varying quite a bit depending on the room type you choose.

Checking Out the Rooms and Affiliated Properties

There appear to be about 10 room types in total, including A, B, C, G, Fugetsu, Karin, Suichiku, Kasui, and TB. They range from simple types with just a 10-tatami-mat Japanese-style room, to Japanese-Western style rooms with twin or double beds. Multiple room types apparently come with an in-room bath (a private bath fed with hot spring water right in the room). As someone who prefers staying indoors, I find it appealing that there are room types where you can soak in the bath at your leisure without leaving the room.

There also seems to be an affiliated property called Yamamizuki Bettei Miyama Sanso, which I could reach via a link from the official site's menu. I also noticed a connection to a name that translates to something like Kurokawa Fuji Resort, but I couldn't confirm the specific operating structure from the official site.

I also couldn't find any mention of parking availability or the number of spaces on the official site's access page. If you're heading there by car, it might be worth asking when you make your reservation.

Hearing that there are room types with an in-room hot spring bath is a pretty happy point for someone like me who doesn't want to leave the room. And since I'm not a driver, having a shuttle service is especially reassuring.

Access and Nearby Attractions

By car, it's apparently about an hour from the Hita Interchange on the Oita Expressway, and about two hours from the Kumamoto Interchange on the Kyushu Expressway. For public transportation, options include a direct Nishitetsu bus from Hakata Station to Kurokawa departing from Fukuoka Airport, or the Kyushu Odan (Cross-Kyushu) sightseeing bus from Kumamoto Station or Beppu Station if arriving via Kumamoto Airport. If you let the inn know in advance when you'll arrive at the Kurokawa Onsen bus stop, they'll apparently arrange a shuttle pickup. As someone who barely drives, I found this shuttle service quite reassuring.

Around the inn, there are food spots within the Kurokawa Onsen town such as Hanakarafu, Tofu Kissho, and the Kurokawa branch of Terakoya Honpo (known for its grilled rice cracker mochi), as well as sightseeing spots like Nabegataki Falls. That said, these are introduced as information about the Kurokawa Onsen town as a whole, and I couldn't determine the specific distance or travel time from Yamamizuki within the scope of what I looked into.

Rakuten Mobile Signal Conditions

I tried entering the address corresponding to Yamamizuki's location into the official my area coverage simulation tool, but no result came up—instead, it just showed a message saying something like 'currently undergoing temporary maintenance.' I tried a few more times and got the same result, so unfortunately, I have to report that I wasn't able to confirm the signal conditions this time.

Since this is a hot spring area in the mountains, it seems like the kind of location where signal reception could vary from spot to spot. If you're actually planning to stay there, it might be a good idea to check the official tool yourself before heading out.

This was the first time I've run into a case where no result showed up at all. As a Rakuten Mobile user myself, this is exactly the kind of situation where I'd want to test it out on-site, but this time I can only honestly report that I couldn't find out.

Wrapping Up

To sum it up again, my impression was that Yamamizuki is a standalone inn representing Kurokawa Onsen, nestled along a mountain stream. With a choice of 10 room types and several types that come with an in-room bath, it seems well-suited for people who want to relax in their room. Since there's also shuttle service for bus users, it struck me as an inn that's accessible even for someone like me who doesn't drive.

As for Rakuten Mobile signal conditions, the result was that the official tool didn't display any assessment at all. If signal quality is a concern for you, it's probably best to check the official website for the latest information before your stay.
