I Looked Into Ryokan Misato
2026-09-15

I have a driver's license, but I'm what's called a paper driver—someone who never actually drives—so on this blog I mainly look into inns and campsites that seem reachable even without a car. I've covered a number of campsites and day-trip hot springs in Kyushu so far, but this time I decided to change things up a bit and take a look at a ryokan in Kurokawa Onsen.
The reason I decided to look into Ryokan Misato this time is that a line caught my eye: "a sulfur spring whose color changes depending on the time of day." Kurokawa Onsen tends to bring to mind a charming hot-spring-hopping atmosphere, but apparently this particular inn has a rather unusual type of spring, and even someone as indoorsy as me got curious. It also seems to be within walking distance of a bus stop, so I looked into that aspect too—whether it's easy to reach without a car.
Apparently this is the only inn in Kurokawa Onsen where you can enjoy a sulfur spring whose color changes depending on the time of day, and the hot spring itself seems to be a major draw.
As for Rakuten Mobile signal conditions, I'll be upfront that the official tool didn't display a result, so I wasn't able to confirm this at the time of writing.
I've laid out the details below.
An Inn That Takes Pride in a Sulfur Spring That Changes Color Over Time
Ryokan Misato is a ryokan located in the Kurokawa Onsen area of Minamioguni Town, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture. Apparently it's the only place in Kurokawa Onsen where a sulfur spring wells up whose water color changes depending on the time of day. This type of spring seems to be rare even within Kurokawa Onsen, and I felt it would likely leave a strong impression on visitors who come specifically to hop between hot springs.
It seems the whole building underwent renovation and reopened in the summer of 2024, so the facility as a whole appears to be relatively new. It's also apparently certified under the Japan Tourism Agency's "Heart-Warming Barrier-Free" certification program, which suggests it's an inn designed so a wide range of guests can stay comfortably and with peace of mind.
Checking Out the Rooms and Meal Plans
In August 2024, a new room type called the "New Japanese-Western Style Room" was apparently added, and there also seem to be plans that come with a perk of using a private family bath. On top of the large communal sulfur spring bath, having the option to enjoy the hot spring privately sounds like a nice touch.
There seem to be several stay plans available, including the "Misato Kaiseki Plan" (one night with two meals), as well as a "Misato Kaiseki with Filling Akaushi Beef Bowl Plan," a "Breakfast-Included Plan," a "Horse Sashimi Platter Plan," and a "Room-Only Plan." According to the Kurokawa Onsen Tourism Ryokan Cooperative's official site, the rough price guide for one night with two meals, before tax, is somewhere around 20,000 to 27,000 yen per person. That said, the exact amount isn't clearly stated on the official site and seems to vary by plan, so if you're actually booking, it's probably best to check the "List of Stay Plans" on the official website.
- Check-in / check-out: Check-in from 3:00 PM, check-out until 10:00 AM (open year-round, with irregular closures apparently)
- Reservations: Through the online booking system on the official website. Booking by phone is also apparently possible.
- Parking: There are apparently 15 spaces, so it sounds reassuring even if you're visiting by car.

A bath where the water color changes over time sounds exciting just from the photos alone. Since I don't drive, I'm honestly more interested in the shuttle service and the walking distance from the bus stop than in the fact that there are 15 parking spaces.
Easy Access Even by Bus
According to the official website, it's about a 7-minute walk from the nearest bus stop, Kurokawa Onsen. As a paper driver myself, this kind of walking-distance information is genuinely reassuring.
On top of that, if you let them know your bus arrival time when booking, there's apparently a shuttle service to and from the Kurokawa Onsen bus stop. Even on the day itself, if you contact the ryokan, they say they'll come pick you up within 5 to 10 minutes, which sounds reassuring if you have a lot of luggage or aren't familiar with the area. That said, the official website doesn't specify the shuttle's operating hours or the deadline for advance requests, so I wasn't able to confirm those details. It might be a good idea to ask about this directly when making your reservation.
Rakuten Mobile Signal Conditions
As a Rakuten Mobile user, the signal conditions at a place I'm staying are always something I want to check. When I tried looking up Ryokan Misato's location using the official "My Area Connectivity Simulation" tool, no result came up this time—instead I got a message saying something like "currently under temporary maintenance."
It seems this kind of message can appear when data isn't available for a particular address, and in this case I wasn't able to confirm the signal conditions. For now, I'll just mark this as "unknown." In a mountainous area like Kurokawa Onsen, signal conditions could well vary from spot to spot, so if you're actually considering staying there, I'd recommend checking the official tool yourself with your own device, closer to your travel dates, just to be safe.

Honestly, not getting a result was a bit of a frustrating point while researching this. But I can't just make something up, so I wanted to be upfront about it here.
Wrapping Up
To sum it up, my impression of Ryokan Misato is that it's a rare type of hot spring inn—the only one in Kurokawa Onsen where you can enjoy a sulfur spring whose color changes depending on the time of day. The fact that the whole facility has been refreshed, with the full renovation in the summer of 2024 and the addition of the new Japanese-Western style room, also left a good impression on me, and being just a 7-minute walk from the bus stop with a shuttle service available is a nice point for someone like me who doesn't drive.
On the other hand, the official tool didn't return a result for Rakuten Mobile signal conditions, so this time I'm marking that as "unknown." If you're concerned about this, checking the official Rakuten Mobile tool yourself should make it easier to plan your trip.
