I Looked Into Atami Ekimae Onsen Bathhouse (Tawara Bathhouse)
2026-08-27

This blog has mostly focused on campsites so far, but lately I've also been covering day-trip hot springs and quick little stopover spots under a category I call "Hokans Detours."
This time I looked into Atami Ekimae Onsen Bathhouse (Tawara Bathhouse). While writing an article about a trip to Atami, I started wondering if there was a place where I could soak in a hot spring without walking too far from the station, so I decided to dig into it.
The biggest draw seems to be that it's a community bathhouse with a naturally sourced, unfiltered hot spring, just 2-3 minutes on foot from JR Atami Station.
The Rakuten Mobile signal came back as a "C" rating on the official tool, so I'll be upfront about that.
I've put together the details below.
A Community Bathhouse Right Near the Station
As the name suggests, Atami Ekimae Onsen Bathhouse (Tawara Bathhouse) is apparently located about 2-3 minutes on foot from JR Atami Station. There seem to be several community bathhouses in the Atami area, but this one appears to be among the closest to the station. It struck me as a location that would work well if you wanted to freshen up right after stepping off the shinkansen.
It's apparently open from 2 PM to 9 PM, closed on Wednesdays. Being a community bathhouse, it seems to be the type of place you can drop into on the spot without a reservation. The pricing looked quite reasonable for a day-trip hot spring: 500 yen for adults, 200 yen for elementary school kids, and 100 yen for young children (age 2 and up).
The water is apparently a chloride-type spring, drawn straight from the source without dilution or reuse. It's said to feature a fairly salty spring water, and I saw mentions that it leaves your skin feeling smooth after bathing and is good for poor circulation. That said, sources varied on whether the water is diluted with regular water, heated artificially, or recirculated through filtration, so I couldn't confirm this for certain. If that matters to you, it's probably best to check on-site.

Being able to walk from the station and soak in a hot spring right away feels like a huge plus for someone like me who doesn't drive.
Simple Facilities, Made for a Quick Visit
The bathing area apparently has a single tub in the men's section, while the women's section is split between a tub for adults and one for children. There doesn't seem to be an outdoor bath, so this looks like a facility meant purely for enjoying the indoor bath.
One thing worth knowing ahead of time is that almost all the amenities come with an extra charge. From what I found, here's the rundown:
- Towel: 100 yen (comes with a soap set)
- Soap: 50 yen
- Shampoo: 50 yen (comes with conditioner)
- Hair dryer: included in the admission fee
- Locker: large lockable locker for 100 yen
Bath towels apparently aren't provided, so you'd need to bring your own or buy one on site. There's no lounge area, shop, or dining space, and no dedicated parking either, but given that it's within walking distance of the station, the place probably isn't really designed with car access in mind. There's also a shopping arcade near Atami Station called Nakamise, so it might be worth taking a short stroll there before or after your bath.
Rakuten Mobile Signal Conditions
When I checked the location of this facility (in the Tawaramoto area of Atami City) using the official My Area Connectivity Simulation tool, the overall rating came back as a "C."
Since the result was a "C" rating, it's probably worth keeping in mind as one factor to consider before your visit. If you're planning to use data while you're there, it might be reassuring to factor this result in ahead of time.

The "C" rating was a bit surprising to me, but I suppose even a spot right by the station can vary depending on things like nearby buildings. Just being honest about it here.
Wrapping Up
To sum it all up, Atami Ekimae Onsen Bathhouse (Tawara Bathhouse) left me with the impression of a facility where you can soak in a naturally sourced, unfiltered hot spring at an affordable price, just 2-3 minutes on foot from JR Atami Station. The facilities are simple, and most amenities come at an extra cost, so it's probably best to plan for a quick, light visit.
As for the Rakuten Mobile signal, my check this time came back with a "C" rating. If that's a concern for you, you can check it yourself using the official Rakuten Mobile tool before your visit. For more detailed information, it's also worth checking Atami City's official website.
