I Looked Into ONSEN RYOKAN Sanki
2026-09-07

Besides campgrounds, I'm also curious about the occasional 'hokansu' (hotel + vacance) style getaway where you relax at a hot spring ryokan, so I sometimes look into that kind of accommodation on this blog too.
This time, I looked into ONSEN RYOKAN Sanki, located in the Itamuro Onsen area of Nasushiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture. I found out that another ryokan I'd been interested in, in the same area, was closed for an extended period, so while searching for an alternative that was actually open, I came across this ryokan, known for its naturally flowing hot spring water straight from the source.
My impression was that this is a ryokan where all 8 rooms have different layouts, and you can quietly enjoy hot spring water straight from the source.
According to the official tool, the Rakuten Mobile signal comes out as a 'C' rating, so it doesn't seem to be particularly good.
I've summarized the details below.
A Standalone Ryokan with 8 Rooms in Itamuro Onsen
Sanki is apparently a hot spring ryokan located in the Itamuro Onsen area of Nasushiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture. Check-in is from 3:00 PM, check-out is until 11:00 AM, and it seems the entire building is non-smoking.
I couldn't find specific accommodation rates listed on the official website, and it looks like you need to check availability and pricing through a dedicated reservation system. Reservations by phone also appear to be accepted.
As for access, it's about 19 km from the Tohoku Expressway interchange, with a route via prefectural roads. If traveling by train and bus, you'd take a Kanto Jidosha bus from Nasushiobara Station, then walk a few minutes from the last stop, Itamuro Onsen. There also appears to be one shuttle van per day (reservation required) from the west exit rotary of Nasushiobara Station, which seems like a helpful option for someone like me who doesn't drive. The official website doesn't mention whether parking is available or how many spaces there are, so I wasn't able to confirm that.

As someone with a driver's license I never actually use, having a shuttle from the station is a quietly nice touch for me. That said, since it's apparently just one run a day, checking the timing seems essential.
8 Rooms, Each with a Different Character, and Hot Spring Water Straight from the Source
There are 8 rooms in total, each named after a different plant — plum, peach, citron, mandarin orange, bitter orange, tangerine, maple, and another maple variety — and apparently each one has a different layout. In particular, two of the rooms are said to come with their own private bath and toilet, featuring a view bath made entirely of hinoki cypress where you can enjoy hot spring water straight from the source, which gives the impression that you could feel like you're hopping between different baths even without leaving your room. The official website doesn't mention whether in-room Wi-Fi is available, so if that matters to you, it might be worth checking in advance.
The hot spring water comes from a source called the Yamaguchi Source, an alkaline simple hot spring with a water temperature of 42.2°C, described as colorless, transparent, and nearly odorless and tasteless. Its listed benefits include relief from neuralgia, muscle pain, and poor circulation, as well as recovery from fatigue — the kind of effects associated with traditional therapeutic bathing. The large communal bath includes both an open-air bath and an indoor bath, and it's said to be built to recreate the standing bath style that has long been traditional in Itamuro Onsen. I couldn't find any mention of a sauna on the official website.
Meals appear to be served in private, Japanese-modern style dining rooms, with a choice of tatami seating or chairs, featuring a Japanese course menu that emphasizes locally sourced ingredients. There also seems to be a good range of facilities for relaxing on-site, including a lobby with a wood-burning stove, a reservation-only aromatherapy spa (apparently available to men as well), and a lounge open until 9:00 PM.
A Note for Those Considering a Day-Trip Bath
As far as I could tell from the official website's top page and the hot spring page, there was no clear mention of hours or pricing for day-trip bathing. On the other hand, looking at reviews, it seems that day-trip bathing for non-guests generally isn't accepted, except in special cases where a specific membership card or bathing pass is presented, or where a reservation has been made in advance.
So if you're considering a day-trip visit, this doesn't seem like the kind of place you can casually drop into as a 'day-use hot spring' — it seems safer to call ahead and confirm whether it's possible and under what conditions.
Rakuten Mobile Signal Conditions
When I checked this facility's location using the official "My Area Connectivity Simulation" tool, the overall rating came out as "C."
Perhaps because Itamuro Onsen is located in a mountainous area, the rating suggests it's worth checking the connectivity situation in advance. If you're planning to use Rakuten Mobile during your stay, it seems like a good idea to check the conditions before you head out.

With a 'C' rating, it might not be ideal for my usual style of relaxing at a hot spring ryokan while streaming videos online. It seems reassuring to check in advance whether in-house Wi-Fi is available.
Wrapping Up
To sum up, ONSEN RYOKAN Sanki gave me the impression of being a standalone ryokan in Itamuro Onsen, where all 8 rooms have different layouts and you can relax while enjoying hot spring water straight from the source. There seemed to be a lot of elements — like the individuality of each room and rooms with private view baths — that would suit someone looking for a quiet stay. On the other hand, day-trip bathing may not normally be accepted, so if you're considering it, it seems best to confirm in advance.
As for the Rakuten Mobile signal, the official tool shows a 'C' rating. If you're planning to rely on it as your means of connectivity during your stay, it might be reassuring to check with the official Rakuten Mobile tool beforehand.
