I Looked Into Oedo Onsen Monogatari Unzen Toyokan
2026-09-09

I've been steadily working through a project of looking into facilities I've never visited—mostly day-trip hot springs and inns—one by one and writing them up on this blog. I hadn't covered much of the Kyushu area yet, so this time I looked into an inn at Unzen Onsen in Nagasaki.
What got me started was noticing, while browsing a booking site, that there seemed to be a period when this place qualified for a Kyushu reconstruction support discount campaign. As someone who's more of an indoor type, hearing about a good deal always catches my attention. So I went ahead and put together what I found about Oedo Onsen Monogatari Unzen Toyokan.
You can drop in for a day-trip bath without a reservation, and the buffet meal apparently has quite a following, so it seems like an easy option to swing by while wandering around the Unzen Onsen area.
That said, my actual signal test for Rakuten Mobile came back with a C rating, which honestly wasn't great, so if you rely heavily on your connection, it might be worth keeping in mind.
I've laid out the details below.
What kind of inn is Unzen Toyokan?
This is a resort hotel located in Obama-cho, Unzen City, Nagasaki Prefecture, apparently operated by the Oedo Onsen Monogatari group. On travel booking sites, it also seems to be listed under a different name at times, and it looks like it may have belonged to a different brand at some point in the past. Looking at the current official website, though, the branding seems to be consistently presented as Oedo Onsen Monogatari now.
The hotel has 149 rooms in total—98 Japanese-style rooms and 45 Japanese-Western style rooms—which gives the impression of a fairly large-scale property. Check-in is apparently between 3 PM and 7 PM, and check-out is at 11 AM (this info comes from a travel site rather than the official site itself, so I couldn't verify it directly, but it should still be useful as a rough guide).
A day-trip bath with no reservation needed seems to be a highlight
One notable feature of this inn seems to be that it accepts day-trip bathing guests without requiring a reservation. Hours are apparently split into two blocks—7 AM to 10 AM and 3 PM to midnight (last entry at 10 PM)—with pricing for adults at 700 yen on weekdays, 1,000 yen on weekends/holidays, and 1,200 yen during peak periods. For elementary schoolers and young children, it's 450 yen on weekdays, 450 yen on weekends/holidays, and 540 yen during peak periods, with kids under 3 free (all prices tax included). Towel rental apparently costs an extra 330 yen.
The baths include separate large communal baths for men and women, an open-air bath, a sauna, and apparently a private rental bath as well. That said, I wasn't able to confirm the water quality or the name of the hot spring source, since I couldn't get the relevant page on the official site to load properly. Also, it seems that guests with tattoos can't use the large communal bath unless they're fully covered with the facility's designated paid cover seals. If that's a concern for you, it might be worth checking in advance.
- Table tennis / golf practice corner: paid
- Karaoke room: paid, 550 yen per adult per hour, 330 yen per child per hour (same rate up to 3 people)
- Gift shop: apparently located inside the building
- Parking: 90 spaces, no reservation needed, free
- Wi-Fi: available in all rooms (wireless LAN)
- Credit cards: Visa, JCB, Mastercard, Diners, American Express, and others accepted
As for the buffet meal I was curious about, it's apparently served in a dining hall or large banquet room, and I came across several mentions of it being popular. However, due to how the relevant page on the official site was formatted, I wasn't able to confirm the specific menu, timing, or pricing. It seems safest to check the details when making a reservation.

Being able to drop in for a day-trip bath without a reservation feels like great news for someone like me who likes stopping by on a whim. I'm curious about the buffet too, but it's a bit frustrating that I couldn't confirm the details.
Rakuten Mobile Signal Conditions
Since I'm a Rakuten Mobile user who barely drives, I always end up paying close attention to signal conditions when I travel. This time too, I checked the location of this facility using the official My Area Connectivity Simulation tool.
The overall result came back as a C rating. Since Wi-Fi is apparently available in every room, it seems like a good idea to plan on relying mainly on Wi-Fi for connectivity there. If signal quality matters to you for work or travel, it might be worth checking in advance.

A C rating is definitely a bit concerning. It's a relief that there's in-room Wi-Fi, but I'd brace myself for spotty connectivity when out and about.
The surrounding hot spring town caught my interest too
The Unzen Onsen town area apparently has notable spots like the Unzen Jigoku (hell valley), and given how close it is to the inn, I imagine plenty of guests take the opportunity to wander around. I also came across mentions of a foot bath called Hotto Futto 105 at the nearby Obama Onsen, though I wasn't able to confirm the actual distance from this hotel. It could still be useful info if you're planning to explore the hot spring town as part of your trip.
Wrapping Up
Pulling it all together, Oedo Onsen Monogatari Unzen Toyokan struck me as a resort hotel where you can enjoy a day-trip bath without a reservation and also look forward to a popular buffet meal. With a large number of rooms and a full lineup of a large communal bath, an open-air bath, and even a private rental bath, it seems like an easy option to consider when stopping by the Unzen Onsen area.
On the other hand, the Rakuten Mobile signal came back with a C rating, so if connectivity matters to you, it's probably worth checking for yourself ahead of time. You can look it up using the official Rakuten Mobile tool, so it might be worth checking alongside your travel planning.
