I Looked Into Minshuku Marutoya
2026-09-14

On this blog, I'm steadily looking into hot spring inns and day-trip bathing spots that seem accessible without a car, one by one.
This time, I looked into Minshuku Marutoya, located in Unzen City, Nagasaki Prefecture. Unzen Onsen has always given me a strong impression of the hell-walking tour, but when I found out there was a guesthouse accepting day-trip bathers, I got curious and decided to check it out.
The biggest appeal I found was how reasonable the day-trip bathing fee is, at just 300 yen.
That said, the Rakuten Mobile signal came back as a C rating, so that might be something to keep in mind.
I've put together the details below.
What Kind of Inn Is Minshuku Marutoya?
It's a guesthouse located in the Unzen area of Obama-cho, Unzen City, apparently within the Unzen Onsen hot spring town itself. It seems to accept day-trip bathers in addition to overnight guests, and according to information listed on Nifty Onsen, the hours are 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with a fee of 300 yen. Being able to drop by a natural hot spring at that price seems like something easy to fit into a stroll around the hot spring town.
As for reservations, I couldn't find anything that looked like an official website, so calling seems like the most reliable way to inquire. I won't list the number here, but searching by the inn's name should make the contact information easy to find.
Checking Out the Facilities
When I checked the Nifty Onsen page, it had the following facility tags listed.
- Open-air bath: There appears to be a bath you can enjoy outdoors
- Stone sauna (ganbanyoku): The listing mentioned a stone sauna at the facility
- Sauna: There also seems to be sauna facilities
- Kakenagashi (continuous flow): Listed as kakenagashi, giving it the impression of a genuine natural hot spring
- Meals: It seems meals are also offered
- Private bath: There's apparently the possibility of reserving a bath for private use
That said, I wasn't able to confirm detailed specifications for each facility (such as size or water quality) on that same page. If you're planning to actually use them, it seems reassuring to call ahead and check.
Incidentally, I noticed the description on Yahoo! Maps mentioning that the inn was founded in the first year of the Bunka era (1804). That gives the impression of quite a historic establishment, but since it's not an official source, I'll just take it as a reference point.

Being able to enjoy a day-trip bath for just 300 yen feels like a nice low bar to clear, even for someone like me who's more of an indoor type. If the founding date of 1804 is accurate, that would mean this inn has been running for over 200 years.
Rakuten Mobile Signal Conditions
I checked using the official "My Area Connectivity Simulation" by entering this facility's location, and the overall rating came back as "C."
I'm a licensed non-driver who doesn't actually drive, but signal strength is a concern even when getting around by bus or other public transportation. Since it came back as a C rating, there may be moments while staying in the Unzen Onsen area where your phone's connection feels unstable.

Honestly, a C rating makes me a little uneasy. I'm the type who feels restless if I can't check maps or social media while traveling, so I'd at least want to take screenshots of maps ahead of time as a precaution.
About the Surrounding Atmosphere
Apparently, the nearest stop is the Unzen bus terminal on the Shimatetsu Bus line, but I couldn't find exact information on how many minutes it is on foot from there. Unzen Jigoku (the hell valley) also seems to be within the same Unzen Onsen hot spring town, so it looks like you could combine a stroll through the area with your day-trip bath. Being accessible by public transportation without a car was a point I wanted to confirm, as someone who doesn't drive myself.
Wrapping Up
To sum it up, Minshuku Marutoya struck me as a guesthouse in Unzen Onsen where you can enjoy a day-trip bath for just 300 yen. With facilities like an open-air bath, stone sauna, and sauna, it's a place worth considering as a quick stop for a bath.
On the other hand, the Rakuten Mobile signal came back as a C rating, so it might be reassuring to know that in advance. Calling ahead seems like the surest way to make a reservation, so it's probably best to confirm business hours before visiting.
