I Looked Into Ryokan Yamadaya

On Komorin's Imaginary Travels, I've written about several hot spring inns and campgrounds that seem accessible without a car.

This time, what caught my attention was the phrase "a rooftop open-air bath with views of the sun setting over Tachibana Bay." Even as an indoor type, the idea of soaking in a hot spring while watching the sunset was appealing, so I looked into Ryokan Yamadaya, located in Obama Onsen in Unzen City, Nagasaki Prefecture.

The Short Version

This ryokan's biggest draw seems to be its rooftop open-air bath, "Iri-hi no Yu," where you can watch the sun set over Tachibana Bay.
Apparently the Rakuten Mobile signal rating here is a C, so it might be worth checking in advance for peace of mind.

I've put together more details below.

What Kind of Ryokan Is Yamadaya, Known for Its "Iri-hi no Yu" Bath?

It's a ryokan in Obama Onsen, located in Obama-cho, Unzen City, Nagasaki Prefecture, and apparently its official name is simply Yamadaya.

Its biggest feature is apparently the rooftop open-air bath called "Iri-hi no Yu," which offers views of the sun setting over Tachibana Bay. Watching the sunset from a cypress-wood tub is something that even I, as an indoor type, would love to try at least once. The indoor bath is reportedly called "Giyaman Buro," which also caught my interest.

  • Number of rooms: apparently 12 total (11 Japanese-style, 1 Western-style)
  • Check-in / check-out: 3:00 PM / 10:00 AM
  • Inquiry hours: 9:00 AM–8:00 PM
  • Room rates: starting from 13,200 yen (tax included) per person for one night with two meals
  • Reservations: apparently can be made through the official website's booking form or by phone

Soaking in a hot spring on the rooftop while watching the sunset—just imagining it feels like such a luxurious experience.

Day-trip Bathing and the Food Are Also Worth Checking Out

It seems they accept day-trip bathing guests as well as overnight guests, with hours from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM. According to the official website, the indoor bath costs 500 yen, the rooftop open-air bath costs 800 yen, and the private rooftop open-air bath costs 1,000 yen. That said, availability may depend on how many overnight guests are using the baths, so it might be a good idea to call ahead on the day of your visit.

Amenities apparently include shampoo, conditioner, a hair dryer, a hairbrush, cotton swabs, men's hair styling product, and rental towels, so it seems like you could stop by for a day visit fairly light on luggage.

As for the food, it seems to center on locally caught seafood, and the official website describes the live flounder sashimi as an exceptional dish. This might be a great ryokan for anyone who wants to take their time enjoying the bounty of the sea.

Rakuten Mobile Signal Conditions

When I checked this location using Rakuten's official "My Area Connectivity Simulation" tool, the overall rating came back as a C.

Since it's rated C, connectivity might vary depending on the exact location and the building itself. If you plan on watching a lot of video or joining online meetings, it might be worth checking in advance.

A C rating is a bit of a concern, but at least knowing about it ahead of time lets you mentally prepare.

Access and Parking

From JR Isahaya Station, it's apparently about a 60-minute bus ride to Obama via Shimatetsu Bus. The official website doesn't specify how many minutes it takes to walk from the Obama bus terminal to the ryokan—it just says, "Please come to the ryokan first, and we'll guide you from there"—so it seems like you'd need to check once you arrive.

If you're driving, you can apparently use the Obama town-run parking lot for free. That's not much use to me since I barely drive, but it could be a helpful detail for anyone arriving by car.

Wrapping Up

To sum up, my impression is that Yamadaya's biggest appeal is being able to watch the sun set over Tachibana Bay from its rooftop open-air bath, "Iri-hi no Yu." Since it's also available for day-trip bathing, it seems like you could enjoy it just by timing your visit around sunset, even without staying overnight.

As for Rakuten Mobile signal conditions, the rating came back as a C, so if that's a concern for you, it might be worth checking with Rakuten Mobile's official tool.
