I Looked Into Ryokan Wataya

On this blog, I've been looking into a number of hot spring inns in Kyushu, focusing on places that even I, someone who doesn't drive, might be able to get to.

This time, I looked into Ryokan Wataya, located in Obama Onsen in Unzen City, Nagasaki Prefecture. I came across its name while searching for inns eligible for the Kyushu Recovery Support Discount, and I got curious about it being a small, family-run inn with Japanese-style rooms, so I decided to dig deeper.

The Short Version

All 12 rooms are Japanese-style, and the inn takes pride in the homey, family hospitality provided by the proprietress—it seemed like a place well-suited to group stays or training camp use.
According to the official tool, the Rakuten Mobile signal came back with a rating of C.

I've summarized the details below.

A Family-Run Inn Nestled in Obama Onsen

Ryokan Wataya is featured on the official website of the Obama Onsen Ryokan Association, and it appears to be located in an area near Mount Unzen, on the western side of the Shimabara Peninsula. It's described as "a warm, family-style inn overflowing with human warmth," and I got the impression of a homey inn where the proprietress herself takes care of guests throughout their stay.

It seems the inn also has its own dedicated official website, but I wasn't able to access it at the time I checked, so this post is mainly based on information from the Obama Onsen Ryokan Association's official website.

  • Location: Obama-cho, Unzen City, Nagasaki Prefecture (I've omitted the detailed street address)
  • Reservations: By phone or through the official website (please check the association's official website for the phone number)
  • Rates: Apparently starting from 9,500 yen (tax included) per person for one night with two meals

Starting from 9,500 yen for one night with two meals felt like a pretty accessible price, even for someone like me who's more of an indoor type. Since they take pride in their kaiseki-style course meals, I imagine plenty of guests stay mainly for the food.

All 12 Rooms Are Japanese-Style, Designed to Accommodate Groups Too

There are 12 guest rooms in total, all Japanese-style, apparently ranging in size from 6 to 12 tatami mats. Beyond solo travelers or couples, the layout looked like it could easily accommodate groups or larger parties, such as training camps.

As for finer details like the bath water quality, whether there are indoor or outdoor baths, or the in-house Wi-Fi environment, I couldn't find detailed information within the scope of my research. If these points matter to you, it's probably best to inquire directly when making a reservation.

Also, this inn apparently accepts day-trip bathers as well, so it seemed like it could be a good option even if you just want to use the hot spring without staying overnight.

About Access to the Area

The nearest stop appears to be the Shimatetsu Bus "Obama" stop, within walking distance, though I couldn't confirm the exact walking time. The hot spring town of Obama Onsen also seems to spread out within walking distance around the inn, so it might be nice to take a stroll after arriving.

Rakuten Mobile Signal Conditions

When I checked this facility's location using the official "My Area Connectivity Simulation" tool, the overall rating came back as "C."

If connectivity is important to you, it might be worth checking in advance for peace of mind. Please note that this is simply the result from the official tool, and I haven't been able to confirm the actual signal strength inside the building myself.

A rating of C is honestly a bit concerning. If you're a Rakuten Mobile user planning to handle work calls or messages during your stay, I'd recommend checking it yourself beforehand for peace of mind.

Wrapping Up

To sum it up, Ryokan Wataya struck me as an inn in Obama Onsen where all 12 rooms are Japanese-style, and the family hospitality from the proprietress leaves a lasting impression. Since it also accepts day-trip bathers, there seem to be ways to enjoy it beyond just staying overnight.

On the other hand, the Rakuten Mobile signal came back with a C rating, so it's probably worth keeping this in mind when considering a stay. If it's a concern for you, please check the actual result yourself using Rakuten Mobile's official tool.
