I Looked Into Nasu Auto Campground Green Base

This series where I steadily research campgrounds and day-trip hot springs in my own way and turn them into articles has grown quite a bit before I even realized it. This time, it's the Tochigi Nasu area.

Nasu has a strong image as a hot spring destination, but I came across a facility called Nasu Auto Campground Green Base, and I got curious about the fact that it apparently has private rooms with Wi-Fi where you can work, so I decided to look into it. As someone who leans more indoor-type, whether or not I can work at a campground is a pretty important point for me.

The Short Version

It seems like a campground where you can spend time using Wi-Fi in a paid "workation room," and I got the impression it could work well for a stay where you're also getting work or studying done.
As for Rakuten Mobile's signal, the official tool didn't produce any determination at all, so I'm treating it as "unknown" this time.

I've put together the details below.

What Kind of Place Is Green Base, Nestled in the Forests of Nasuyumoto?

This is an auto campground located in the Nasuyumoto area of Nasu Town, Tochigi Prefecture, apparently situated in a forest at an elevation of around 630 meters. There's a small stream running through the grounds, and apparently two ponds as well. Each seems to be used as a fishing area and as an activity area for things like Canadian canoeing, which gave me the impression of a place where you can feel close to nature.

Check-in is from 12:00 to 17:00, and check-out is at 11:00, apparently. They also seem to offer early check-in (from 9:00, with an extra fee) and late check-out (with an extra fee per hour). Reservations can be made through sites like Rakuten Travel Camp and Nap, and it seems day camps and optional add-ons can also be booked by phone.

There's quite a wide variety of site types, including dog-free sites, auto camp sites, riverside sites, water deck sites, RV sites, and even deck sites with a private bath. Rates are divided into three tiers depending on the season: "Value" (weekdays), "Regular" (Saturdays and days before holidays), and "Top" (Obon, Golden Week, and New Year's). For example, auto camp sites run roughly 5,500 to 12,100 yen, while deck sites with a bath run roughly 19,800 to 26,400 yen, giving the impression of a fairly wide range of options.

  • Dog-free site: 6,600–13,200 yen (10A AC power, up to 4 people)
  • Auto camp site: 5,500–12,100 yen (10A AC power, up to 4 people)
  • Riverside site: 3,300–5,500 yen (no AC power, up to 2 people)
  • Deck site with a private bath: 19,800–26,400 yen (10A AC power, up to 4 people)

As for the operating season and regular closing days, I couldn't find a clear statement on the official website, so it's hard to say for certain whether the campground operates year-round. As you get closer to booking, it seems like a good idea to double-check the latest operating status on the official website just to be safe.

With this many site types, I imagine just choosing one would be pretty fun on its own. I don't drive myself, so if I actually went, I'd probably have to rely on a taxi or ask someone else, but even just looking through the options is a nice little change of pace.

Facilities That Catch an Indoor Type's Eye, Like the Workation Room and Bath House

What caught my attention most this time was the "workation room" inside the management building. There are four rooms, all fully equipped with Wi-Fi, apparently, and it seems to be a paid option available from 8:00 to 20:00, priced at 1,100 yen per hour per person. It doesn't seem to be free Wi-Fi covering the whole grounds; rather, it's positioned as something used on a per-room basis. When you want a quiet environment for work or studying, having private rooms like this seems like it would really help.

There also seem to be multiple options when it comes to bathing.

  • Bath house (with toilet): available 24 hours during your stay, hair dryer provided, 2,200 yen per night
  • Center house private bath: 30-minute private rental, 500 yen per person, 8:00–20:00 (no reservations, available on a first-come basis if open)
  • Workation room with Wi-Fi: 4 rooms, 1,100 yen per hour per person, 8:00–20:00

That said, I couldn't find detailed information on the official website about ordinary, free-to-use shared restrooms. There was an explanation that the paid bath house option includes a toilet, so that might be the facility to use, but it seems safer to contact the campground directly to confirm the details.

Beyond that, activities seemed pretty well-rounded too, including a Nordic-style barrel sauna (private rental at 5,500 yen per hour, among other options), a fishing area where you can catch char and rainbow trout, and summer-only pools for kids and dogs. Rental gear also seems to be available across the board, so it looks like camping with next to nothing packed could work here too.

Rakuten Mobile Signal Conditions

I tried checking this facility's location using the official "My Area Connectivity Simulation" tool, but no determination appeared, and instead I got a fallback message saying something like the tool was currently under temporary maintenance. I tried a few times and got the same result each time, so I'm treating the signal condition as "unknown" this time.

Honestly, I just wasn't able to get enough information to say definitively whether the signal is good or bad. To find out whether you'll actually get reception, it seems best to check the official tool again closer to your planned stay.

When I saw that no determination could be made, I felt a bit deflated myself. In cases like this, I think it's best not to force a conclusion and just honestly write that I couldn't tell.

Nearby Hot Springs and Sightseeing Spots Worth Checking Out

Nearby, there's a hot spring called Kinchan Onsen about 5 minutes away by car, and if you venture a little further, Nasu Onsen Shika-no-yu is about 20 minutes away by car, so it seems like you could take a breather at a hot spring in between camping. Minamigaoka Farm and Nasu Safari Park also appear to be about 10 minutes away by car, giving me the impression that the location would suit families and stays with pets as well.

As for grocery shopping, supermarkets and home improvement stores are apparently about 20 minutes away by car, so it might be reassuring to prepare your food and any forgotten items ahead of time, or pick them up early.

Wrapping Up

To sum it all up, my impression of Nasu Auto Campground Green Base is that it's a campground with a Wi-Fi-equipped workation room and several bathing options, making it easy to stay comfortable while spending time out in nature. The variety of site types is also appealing, from dog-free sites to deck sites with a private bath, making it easy to pick one that fits your purpose.

On the other hand, I wasn't able to get a determination from the official tool regarding Rakuten Mobile's signal conditions, so this time the result simply stayed at unknown. If this point matters to you, it seems like a good idea to check the official tool again before your visit.
