I Looked Into the Relaxation and Cuisine Inn: Mori no Rengakan
2026-09-04

In this series I like to call 'Komorin's Imaginary Trips,' I've been continuously looking into campgrounds, day-trip hot springs, and lodging facilities one after another. Before I knew it, quite a number of places had piled up, but this time I decided to check out yet another new spot.
What caught my eye this time was a ryokan called Mori no Rengakan (the Relaxation and Cuisine Inn), located in Takamori Town, Kumamoto Prefecture. Seeing the words 'relaxation' and 'cuisine' side by side in the name, I got the feeling it might be a place where I could spend some quiet time.
It's a cozy little inn with just four rooms total, apparently known for its French-based cuisine using local, seasonal ingredients.
As for Rakuten Mobile signal conditions, the official tool didn't display a result and instead showed a maintenance notice, so I wasn't able to confirm anything this time.
I've laid out the details below.
What Kind of Inn Is Mori no Rengakan?
Mori no Rengakan is apparently a ryokan located in Takamori Town, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture. From what I could see on the official website, it's built around the theme of 'relaxation and cuisine,' and it seems to be a small-scale inn with just four rooms. The meals are apparently served as a French-based course using local, seasonal ingredients, with dinner scheduled for 6:30 PM. What stood out to me was the notice stating guests 'must arrive by 6:00 PM.' If you're running late, it seems you need to contact them in advance.
Check-in is apparently from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, and check-out is by 10:00 AM. Rates are listed per person including two meals, and seem to vary by room type.
- Room 101: 16,500 yen per person for 2 guests, 15,400 yen per person for 3 guests, 14,300 yen per person for 4 guests (tax included)
- Rooms 201, 202, and 203: 15,400 yen per person for 2 guests, 13,750 yen per person for 3 guests (tax included)
- On certain dates, such as long holiday weekends, rates apparently increase by 1,100 yen per person
- Credit cards can't be used for payment—cash only, apparently

Having only four rooms feels kind of special somehow. The fact that even the dinner arrival time is set so precisely made me think this must be a place that really puts a lot of effort into its course meals.
Room Amenities and Points of Interest for a Homebody Like Me
Each room apparently comes with a bedroom space, a living room space, a bathroom, a toilet, and a washroom, so it sounds like a layout where you could relax comfortably just within your own room. As for amenities, the official website listed the following:
- TV, empty refrigerator, and air conditioning/heating included
- Wi-Fi available in all rooms, and all rooms are non-smoking, apparently
- Amenities such as soap, shampoo, conditioner, a toothbrush, toothpaste, a hair dryer, a face towel, and a bath towel are provided, though it seems you need to bring your own sleepwear
- Bath hours appear to be split into two time slots: 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM
- Parking is free, and pickup service apparently requires a reservation
As someone who stays indoors a lot, just hearing that Wi-Fi is available in every room puts me a bit at ease. That said, the official website didn't go into detail about speed or stability, so it might be worth checking reviews from people who've actually stayed there too.
Rakuten Mobile Signal Conditions
I tried to check this location using the official 'My Area Network Simulation' tool, but no result came up—instead, it showed a message saying something like 'currently undergoing temporary maintenance.'
It seems this kind of message can appear when data for a particular area hasn't been registered yet. In this case, I wasn't even able to get as far as a 'good' or 'unstable' rating—I simply couldn't confirm a result at all, if I'm being honest. Rather than forcing a positive or negative impression, I'll just note it here as unknown, since I couldn't confirm it. If you're curious, it's probably best to check for yourself using the official Rakuten Mobile tool.

Not getting any result at all was actually a first for me. Takamori Town seems to be a nature-rich area, so I guess this kind of thing can happen—it was a learning experience.
I Also Looked Into Nearby Sightseeing Spots and Access
On the official website of the Takamori Town Tourism Promotion Organization, nearby sightseeing spots such as Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine, Kusakabeyoshimi Shrine, and a restaurant called Ajidokoro Sakura were introduced. However, there was no specific mention of the distance or travel time from Mori no Rengakan, so it's probably a good idea to check individually if you're planning an actual visit.
As for access, when using public transportation, the route given involves transferring at Tateno Station on the JR Hohi Line and getting off at Takamori Station on the Minami-Aso Railway. By car, two routes are apparently introduced: one via the Kumamoto Interchange on the Kyushu Expressway, taking National Routes 57 and 325, and another via the Aso Kumamoto Airport Interchange, taking Prefectural Route 28 (through the Tawarayama Tunnel) before joining National Route 325. I do have a driver's license, but I never actually drive, so I can only imagine what the actual roads are like—but having both public transit and driving routes explained is reassuring either way.
As for how to book, in addition to contacting the inn directly by phone, it seems reservations can also be made through booking sites like Rakuten Travel and Jalan.
Wrapping Up
To sum it all up, Mori no Rengakan, the Relaxation and Cuisine Inn, left me with the impression of a cozy little ryokan with just four rooms, offering what sounds like carefully prepared French-based cuisine. The way the rooms are laid out with separate bedroom and living spaces also gave me the sense that comfort and relaxation were carefully thought through.
On the other hand, I wasn't able to confirm Rakuten Mobile's signal conditions through the official tool, so I'm marking that as unknown for now. If you're considering a stay in Takamori Town's nature-rich surroundings, it might be reassuring to check the tool yourself before heading out.
