I Looked Into Kurokawa-So

For my ongoing series on accommodations, I've been focusing mainly on hot spring inns here on this blog, trying to get a sense of their atmosphere from official information alone, without actually staying there myself.

This time, the place that caught my attention was "Kurokawa-So." Kurokawa Onsen is famous for its hot spring hopping culture, but what drew me in here was the fact that it offers three free private baths, so I decided to look into it.

The Short Version

My impression was of a quiet inn in Kurokawa Onsen, equipped with fully private dining rooms and three free private baths where you can spend a peaceful stay.
As for Rakuten Mobile signal conditions, the official tool wasn't able to produce a result, so at this point it remains unknown.

I've summarized the details below.

What Kind of Inn Is Kurokawa-So?

Apparently, this inn is located within the Kurokawa Onsen hot spring town in Minami-Oguni, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture. Check-in runs from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, and check-out is at 11:00 AM, though these times may vary depending on the plan. The guest rooms are 10-tatami-mat Japanese-style rooms on the second floor of the main building, described as being surrounded by greenery in a quiet setting. Even within a lively hot spring town, this seems like the kind of place where you could relax and unwind.

As for reservations, it seems you can book through the list of stay plans and availability calendar on the official website, or by phone. I wasn't able to confirm the specific price range for a stay with two meals included, but for day-trip use of the family bath, there was a listing of 2,500 yen for 50 minutes per room (with a face towel rental included), which might be useful as a reference point.

  • Address: Within the Kurokawa Onsen hot spring town, Minami-Oguni, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture (please check the official website for the exact address)
  • Check-in / Check-out: 3:00 PM–6:00 PM / 11:00 AM (may vary by plan)
  • Parking: 20 spaces, free, no reservation needed, apparently
  • Access: It seems buses direct to Kurokawa Onsen are recommended from the Fukuoka direction, and the Kyushu cross-island bus from the Kumamoto direction

Since I don't drive myself, just knowing that it's accessible by bus was reassuring to hear.

Baths and Meals: Points That Caught My Eye as an Indoor Type

Apparently, the large communal bath and open-air bath operate on a men's/women's rotation system across four types: an open-air and indoor bath exclusively for overnight guests, and an open-air and indoor bath shared by both day-trip visitors and overnight guests. The large communal bath reserved for overnight guests also comes equipped with a low-temperature sauna at around 75°C, giving the impression of solid facilities for anyone who wants to warm up thoroughly.

Personally, what caught my attention most was that there are three free private baths (family baths) that overnight guests can use on a reservation basis. Being able to soak leisurely without worrying about other people around seems like a real plus for someone like me who prefers staying indoors. The water quality is apparently a sodium chloride/bicarbonate sulfate hot spring, said to be effective for neuralgia, muscle pain, and sensitivity to cold, among other things.

As for meals, both dinner and breakfast are apparently served in fully private dining rooms. Along with dishes made using local and seasonal ingredients, the inn also offers a selection of chilled sake and a la carte dishes, so it seems like mealtime here could be a relaxed experience as well.

Rakuten Mobile Signal Conditions

When I checked the location of this facility using the official My Area Connectivity Simulation tool, no result came up—instead, it just displayed a message saying something like "Currently under temporary maintenance." I tried a few times, but got the same result each time, so this time around, I wasn't able to determine whether the signal is good or not—it essentially came back as "unknown."

It seems this kind of message can appear when there isn't enough data registered for a given area, so it doesn't necessarily mean the signal is weak—but at this point, I honestly can't say either way. If you're considering staying here and are concerned about signal conditions, it might be a good idea to check the official tool yourself beforehand.

This was the first time I'd seen a case where no result came up at all, so I was honestly a bit thrown off. I think in cases like this, it's best to just be upfront and say "I don't know."

Wrapping Up

To sum things up, my impression of Kurokawa-So was that of a quiet inn within Kurokawa Onsen, equipped with fully private dining rooms and three free private baths. With four types of large communal baths, a low-temperature sauna, and meals served in private rooms using local ingredients, it gave off an atmosphere well-suited to anyone looking for a relaxed, unhurried stay.

That said, the official tool wasn't able to produce a result for Rakuten Mobile signal conditions, so this remains unknown for now. If you're considering staying here, it's probably worth checking the official tool yourself as well.
