I Looked Into KA-MA-DO Campground

This blog is where I research and summarize campsites, day-trip hot springs, and inns one by one, and the number of campsites near the Kanto area has grown quite a bit.

This time I looked into KA-MA-DO Campground, located in Nasushiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture. What got me interested was that the Nasu area has plenty of nearby attractions like hot springs and ranches, so it seemed easy to plan a trip even for purposes beyond camping.

The Short Version

The easy access—about 3 minutes by car from Nishinasuno-Shiobara IC—along with hot-water cooking areas and washlet-equipped toilets provided at all 32 sites, seemed like reassuring points for indoor types.
That said, the Rakuten Mobile signal came back as a C rating on the official tool, so connectivity might not be something to expect much from.

I've put together the details below.

What Kind of Place Is KA-MA-DO Campground

KA-MA-DO Campground appears to be a drive-in campsite located in the Sembonmatsu area of Nasushiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture. It seems to have been built by hand by the owner, and it operates year-round (closed every Wednesday, though apparently open daily during Golden Week and summer vacation).

Check-in is from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM, and check-out is at 11:00 AM. The management building seems to be open from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, though I also found information suggesting the site manager stays on-site overnight as well. I couldn't find a phone number listed on the official site, and it seemed a bit unusual that the only contact method is email. Reservations appear to be made through nap or Rakuten Travel Camp, so the latter might be an easy choice for anyone collecting Rakuten points. Card payment isn't accepted, so it's probably best to check the on-site payment method in advance.

There are 32 sites in total, made up of 14 sites with power and 18 standard sites. The ground on the sites is apparently covered with coarse gravel, and steel stakes are recommended according to the guidance. The design seems intended to accommodate a wide range of styles, from solo camping to family camping and bushcraft.

Not having a phone number and only email contact might actually be a plus for someone like me who prefers looking things up and booking online. Still, since card payment isn't an option, I'll need to remember to bring cash.

Checking the Facilities That Matter to an Indoor Type Like Me

The toilets are flush, separated by gender, and equipped with washlets. The men's side has 2 Western-style toilets and 1 urinal, while the women's side has 2 Western-style toilets. There's also guidance stating that outdoor shoes aren't allowed and slippers must be worn, which gave me the impression that cleanliness is well considered.

The cooking area has hot water, and there appear to be 7 water taps set up (not counting the cooking building). At least 2 are apparently always available, and the water can also be used as drinking water. There's only one coin-operated shower, priced at 100 yen for 3 minutes and available 24 hours. With only one unit, I imagine it could get a bit crowded during busy periods.

The shop is open from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM and appears to stock a full lineup of fuel-related items, including firewood, charcoal, OD canisters, CB canisters, and white gas. There are also vending machines and a frozen food vending machine (for food and sweets), which seems like it could cover you to some extent if you forget to bring something. Trash bags cost 300 yen if purchased in advance or 400 yen on-site (a set of one 30-liter bag plus two drainer bags), so buying ahead of time seems slightly cheaper.

Pets are allowed, and there's apparently a dog run available as well (limited to overnight and day-camp guests). Handheld and fountain fireworks are okay, but launch-type fireworks and anything that makes a bang are prohibited. I should note that I couldn't confirm whether Wi-Fi is provided, as there was no mention of it on the official site.

I Also Looked Into Nearby Attractions and Shopping Spots

Sembonmatsu Farm and Nasunogahara Park appear to be about a 2-minute drive away, close enough to stop by before or after camping. There's also apparently a hot spring within Sembonmatsu Farm, and since there's only one shower on-site, combining the trip with a nearby hot spring facility like this seems like a good idea. Going a bit further, there are also hot springs such as Shiobara Akatsuki no Yu and Nogi Onsen Yunosato, both about 13 to 15 minutes away by car.

As for shopping, Super Asano, about 5 minutes away by car, seems to be the closest option, and stores like York Benimaru and Beisia are around 10 to 12 minutes away by car as well. Nasu Garden Outlet is also about 15 minutes by car, so it seems fairly easy to combine sightseeing and shopping into one route. Please note that these distances and times are based on search results and haven't been verified against the official site.

Rakuten Mobile Signal Conditions

When I checked this facility's location (the Sembonmatsu area of Nasushiobara City) using the official "my area connectivity simulation" tool, the overall rating came back as a C.

Given the C rating, it seems like a good idea to check the connectivity situation in advance. While access from Nasushiobara IC is good, the signal quality might vary depending on the exact spot. If you have plans that require working or staying in touch online, it seems wise to prepare with this rating in mind.

Hearing a C rating makes me brace myself a little, but spending at least the camping trip away from signal might not be so bad. Still, I'd like to at least check just to be safe.

Wrapping Up

To sum it up again, KA-MA-DO Campground struck me as a campsite with good access—about 3 minutes from Nishinasuno-Shiobara IC—and a well-balanced set of facilities, including hot-water cooking areas and washlet-equipped toilets. Sites appear to be selectable with or without power, and the layout seems designed to accommodate everything from solo camping to family camping.

Since the Rakuten Mobile signal conditions came back as a C rating, if connectivity matters to you, it seems worth preparing with this in mind. If you're concerned, it might be reassuring to check the "my area connectivity simulation" yourself before heading out.
