I Looked Into Beppu Kannawa Onsen Hotel Sansuikan

On this blog, I've been gradually researching hot spring inns and hotels that catch my interest as potential side-trip spots for my "hokans" (hotel + vacation) getaways, mainly by digging through official websites, one by one as a series.

This time, I looked into Hotel Sansuikan, located in Kannawa Onsen in Oita. I found a few details that really stirred up my hokans cravings, like an open-air bath with a view and spacious high-floor suites, so I decided to check things out thoroughly.

The Short Version

My impression was that this hotel offers a classic Kannawa Onsen bathing experience, including the 6th-floor open-air bath with a view called "Tenku no Mori" (Sky Forest).
The Rakuten Mobile signal came back as a "C" rating, though, so that's a bit of a concern.

I've summarized the details below.

A Hotel Set on a Hilltop in Kannawa Onsen

Hotel Sansuikan is, apparently, a hotel located in the Kannawa Onsen area of Beppu City, Oita Prefecture. According to the official website, the formal name is "Beppu Kannawa Onsen Hotel Sansuikan," and it seems the hotel may have gone by a different name at some point in the past.

As for access, it's about a 15-minute drive from JR Beppu Station, and also close to the Beppu Interchange on the Kyushu Expressway. If you're not driving, there's a Kamenoi Bus stop called "Asahi" that's apparently about a one-minute walk away, which looked like a distance even someone like me, with a rarely-used driver's license, could probably manage. That said, I couldn't find any mention on the official site of whether a shuttle bus is available, so I wasn't able to confirm that.

The Large Communal Baths, the Open-Air Bath With a View, and Ongoing Construction

The hotel apparently has two large communal baths called "Ukifune" and "Yumesenryo," each with an attached open-air bath. There's also said to be an open-air bath with a view on the 6th floor called "Tenku no Mori," and the idea of soaking in a bath while taking in a hilltop view felt pretty appealing to me.

However, the official site notes that emergency construction is scheduled for the open-air bath sections of the 1st-floor "Ukifune" and "Yumesenryo" baths, from 9 AM to 4 PM between September 24 and October 14, 2026. It looks like the indoor baths and the 6th-floor open-air bath with a view will still be available as usual during that period, but depending on your timing, this could still affect your visit, so it might be worth double-checking the latest status on the official website. There's also a note about demolition work on nearby buildings that used to be a couple of other hotels, scheduled from November 2025 through the end of October 2026 (tentative), so this situation may also have changed since I wrote this.

The room plans seemed to cover a wide range: a 135-square-meter suite guaranteed on a high floor with its own bath with a view (includes club lounge access and two meals), room plans with a private bath fed by a source spring, plans aimed at couples, standard plans, and plans that include breakfast. The room-only plan apparently allows check-in up to 10 PM, which seems handy if your itinerary has you arriving late. I didn't find specific pricing on the official site itself; it seems that's something you'd need to check through a booking site.

Basic Information

  • Location: Kannawa Onsen area, Beppu City, Oita Prefecture (please check the official website for the exact address)
  • Hours / Check-in: The room-only plan apparently allows check-in up to 10 PM. I couldn't find any mention of standard check-in or check-out times
  • Booking: It looks like you go through the "Reservations" or "Room Plans" sections on the official site, which link out to external booking sites. Phone reservations also seem to be available
  • Nearby sightseeing: The hotel is said to be located in the area associated with the Beppu Jigoku (Hells) sightseeing circuit, but I couldn't find specific distances or travel times on the official site

I sat there just imagining how big a 135-square-meter suite must actually feel. Honestly, having the construction details clearly posted on the official site is a quietly reassuring touch.

Rakuten Mobile Signal Conditions

When I checked the location of this facility using the official "My Area Connectivity Simulator," the overall rating came back as "C." Compared to other hotel-type facilities I've checked, this felt like a somewhat modest rating.

Given the "C" rating, if you plan on watching videos or updating social media frequently, there may be times when the connection isn't very stable. I couldn't find a clear mention of in-house Wi-Fi on the official website, so if you're planning to rely mainly on mobile data, it might be worth preparing a bit in advance.

Honestly, a "C" rating is a little concerning, but at a hot spring inn, having weak signal might actually be seen as a good thing, giving you that sense of being disconnected from everything. Though I'm probably the type who'd end up staring at my phone the whole time anyway…

Wrapping Up

To sum it up, my impression of Hotel Sansuikan was a hotel where you can enjoy a classic Kannawa Onsen bathing experience, highlighted by the 6th-floor open-air bath with a view called "Tenku no Mori". Information about the in-house construction and the nearby demolition work seems to be updated regularly on the official website, so it's probably worth checking for the latest details before your visit. The Rakuten Mobile signal came back as a "C" rating, so if that's a concern for you, it might be reassuring to check using the official Rakuten Mobile tool yourself.
