I Looked Into Kamenoi Hotel Beppu

On this blog, I've been putting together a kind of series looking into inns, campsites, and day-trip hot springs that even I, without a car, might be able to visit—mainly based on information from official websites.

This time I looked into Kamenoi Hotel Beppu. Beppu has a strong image as a hot spring town, but apparently it's just a 5-minute walk from the station, which made it a location that really caught my interest as someone who doesn't drive.

The Short Version

On top of being just a 5-minute walk from JR Beppu Station, it seems like you can enjoy night views and train views from the upper floors as well as jigoku-mushi cuisine on-site, so it gave me the impression it could work well for a car-free trip.
As for the Rakuten Mobile signal conditions, the actual check came back with a rating of C, so if you're concerned about that, it might be a good idea to check in advance.

I've put together the details below.

A 5-Minute Walk from JR Beppu Station—Great Access Even Without a Car

Kamenoi Hotel Beppu is apparently located in the Chuo-machi area of Beppu City, Oita Prefecture. According to the official website, it's about a 5-minute walk from JR Beppu Station, or about 13 minutes by car from Beppu IC. As someone who doesn't drive, being within walking distance of the station felt like a reassuring point.

Check-in is apparently from 15:00, and check-out is by 11:00. As for room rates, there doesn't seem to be a fixed price list published—instead, you check by entering your dates on the booking page. I wasn't able to dig into that this time, so if you're curious, it's probably best to take a look at the booking page on the official website.

Being a 5-minute walk from the station feels like a really welcome condition for someone like me who has a license but basically never drives.

Night Views and Train Views from the Upper Floors, Plus On-Site Dining Highlights

On the official website, the night views and train views from the upper-floor rooms are described as offering "the highest vantage point among hotels in Beppu." Since I haven't actually been there myself, I can't say for sure exactly how much you can see, but judging from the photos, it looked like something worth looking forward to.

There's also a wide range of room types, and based on what I found on the official website, the lineup seems to include the following.

  • Standard Single / Twin: Rooms that seem geared toward solo or two-person trips
  • Triple / Quad: Rooms apparently intended for families or groups
  • Deluxe Twin / Deluxe Quad: Introduced as slightly more spacious rooms
  • 6-Bed Room: Apparently a room with six beds lined up, meant for larger family trips
  • Baby Room: There also seems to be a room prepared for families traveling with young children

When it comes to meals, the in-house restaurant Beppu Bold Kitchen serves everything from breakfast to dinner, and apparently you can even try Beppu's famous jigoku-mushi (hell-steamed) cuisine there. There also seems to be a tantanmen specialty shop called Tantanmen Kumahachitei inside the hotel, and having multiple dining options under one roof felt like a nice point for someone like me who'd rather not bother heading out. On top of that, there's apparently a nostalgic dagashi (retro Japanese penny candy) corner as well, which gave me the impression you could enjoy a bit of that stroll-around feeling even without leaving the building.

Regarding the hot springs, there was a description saying the hotel uses water from "the Beppu hot spring area, which boasts the second-largest spring output in the world," but details like the specific water quality or operating hours of the large communal bath weren't listed on the official website's top page, so I wasn't able to confirm those this time. If you're curious, it's probably best to check the dedicated page before making a reservation.

Rakuten Mobile Signal Conditions

I checked using Rakuten's official "My Area Connectivity Simulation" tool by entering the location of Kamenoi Hotel Beppu (the Chuo-machi area of Beppu City, Oita Prefecture).

The overall result came back as a rating of C. If you're planning on doing online work or watching videos during your stay, it might be reassuring to check this in advance with that rating in mind.

Honestly, a rating of C was a bit concerning to me. If you're a Rakuten Mobile user, it might give you more peace of mind to check it yourself once before your stay.

Wrapping Up

To sum it up again, Kamenoi Hotel Beppu left me with the impression of a hotel worth remembering for its great access—just a 5-minute walk from JR Beppu Station—along with its night views and train views from the upper floors, and the jigoku-mushi cuisine you can enjoy on-site. For someone like me who's thinking about a car-free trip, just being close to the station alone made it feel like a strong candidate.

On the other hand, the Rakuten Mobile signal conditions came back with a rating of C, so if connectivity matters to you, it's probably a good idea to check with the official tool beforehand. There were also some things I couldn't fully look into this time, like room rates, details about the large communal bath, and whether parking is available, so if you're interested, please do check the official website as well.
