I Looked Into Aso Farm Land

So far on this blog, I've slowly been adding to my list of places to research, focusing mainly on campsites and day-trip hot springs that seem accessible without a car. Lately, though, a few places have caught my interest as something between a hotel stay and a proper getaway—places I'd like to check out by taking a bit of a detour—and this time I'm picking one of those to write about.

This time I looked into Aso Farm Land. What caught my eye were photos of its rather unusual dome-shaped lodging buildings, and that's what made me want to check the official website properly.

The Short Version

It seems to be a wellness theme park where you can stay in dome-shaped lodging buildings, a type of facility you don't often see elsewhere.
As for the Rakuten Mobile signal, I tried checking it with the official tool, but it showed a maintenance notice, so I wasn't able to find out the result.

I've put together the details below.

What Kind of Place Is Aso Farm Land?

Apparently it's a wellness theme park located in Minamiaso Village, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture, and one of its defining features seems to be that it combines day-use facilities like stone-bed saunas and hot springs with a lodging area. The lodging area is called something like "Great Nature Aso Health Forest," and true to that name, every room is apparently either a dome type or a detached cottage type. Judging from the photos, the atmosphere is quite different from a typical hotel room, and as I researched it, I felt like a stay there would probably be pretty memorable.

The lodging area seems to be divided into three main zones.

  • Royal Zone: This seems to be positioned as one of the higher-end areas within the lodging zones.
  • Village Zone: Apparently an area with a village-like atmosphere where domes are lined up.
  • Dream Zone: This also seems to be a dome-style lodging option, but I couldn't confirm the detailed amenities for each room on the official site.

I couldn't pin down the exact room sizes or detailed amenities within the scope of my research this time, so if you're curious, it's probably best to check the latest information on the official website before booking.

The idea of staying in a dome is interesting—I'm a total indoor type myself, but I thought a room this out of the ordinary might offer a different kind of fun than just staying home.

Lodging Plans vs. Day-Use Facilities

As for pricing, there doesn't seem to be a single fixed rate table on the top page. Instead, there appear to be several limited-time plans that include one night's stay with two meals. Some plans come bundled with a hot spring free pass or facility-use vouchers, so it looks like it's designed so you can also enjoy the day-use stone-bed sauna and hot spring facilities.

  • Genki Membership: A membership program with no annual fee or enrollment fee, apparently offering a 10% discount at eligible facilities.
  • Day-use reservations: These seem to be made through the official web ticket purchase page.
  • Lodging reservations: In addition to the online reservation system, it seems you can also book through dynamic packages that include transportation, or by phone.

I couldn't find the exact check-in and check-out times on the official website, so it might be worth confirming those when you make your reservation.

How to Get There Without a Car—An Honest Look

I do have a driver's license, but I'm what's called a "paper driver"—someone who doesn't actually drive—so access is always my first concern with places like this. From what I looked into, the nearest stations seem to be Akamizu Station or Tateno Station on the JR Hohi Main Line, and from there it's apparently about a 7 to 12 minute taxi ride to the facility. There doesn't seem to be a shuttle bus from the station.

There also seems to be a route where the Kyushu Sanko Bus's Aso Sanjo Terminal Line stops at a bus stop near the facility, but it's a reservation-required, seat-limited service running just once round trip a day, and it doesn't run in winter, so my impression is that in practice you'd want to plan on taking a taxi. From Aso Kumamoto Airport, another route I found involved taking the free "Airport Liner" shuttle to JR Higo-Ozu Station, then transferring to the Hohi Main Line to reach Akamizu or Tateno Station, and taking a taxi from there. As someone who doesn't actually drive, I felt like it would be worth carefully mapping out my transportation options in advance.

Rakuten Mobile Signal Conditions

I tried checking this facility's location using the official "My Area Network Simulation" tool, but instead of a result, I got a notice saying it was temporarily under maintenance. I tried a few times, but got the same message each time, so I can't say anything definitive about the signal conditions this time—I'm treating the result as unknown.

Since this facility is located in a mountainous area to begin with, I imagine quite a few people are concerned about signal conditions. Since I wasn't able to get a result this time, I'm just sharing the situation as it is.

This was the first time I've run into a case where no result came up, so it was a bit anticlimactic for me too. I think situations like this are exactly when it's most reliable for someone actually visiting to check on-site.

Wrapping Up

To sum up, my impression of Aso Farm Land is that it's a rather unusual type of wellness theme park where you can stay in dome-shaped lodging buildings. Combined with the ability to enjoy day-use stone-bed saunas and hot springs, it seems like it would make for a stay with a real sense of getting away from the everyday. On the other hand, if you're going without a car, it seems best to plan on using a taxi, and as someone who doesn't actually drive, I felt that planning ahead really matters here. Since I wasn't able to get a result for the Rakuten Mobile signal this time, anyone concerned about it should probably check with the official Rakuten Mobile tool themselves.
