I Looked Into ANA InterContinental Beppu Resort & Spa

Up until now, I've been researching lodgings and campsites that seem reachable without a car, writing them up one by one on this blog. This time, I put together another one as a continuation of that series.

I originally planned to look into a hot spring inn in Beppu, but when I checked the official site, it seemed that reservations were temporarily suspended, so I decided to look into a different place instead. Since I was already focused on the Beppu area, I decided to check out ANA InterContinental Beppu Resort & Spa, a place I'd been curious about. Along with the sense of luxury the name gives off, as someone who prefers staying indoors, I was genuinely curious about what the place is actually like — that's what got this started.

The Short Version

It's apparently a luxury resort hotel with a large communal bath and open-air bath overlooking Beppu's scenery, along with multiple restaurants, offering a sense of getting away from everyday life.
As for Rakuten Mobile signal, the official tool didn't display a result, so the outcome was unknown.

I've summarized the details below.

What Is ANA InterContinental Beppu Resort & Spa Like?

This resort hotel is located in the Kannawa Onsen area of Beppu City, Oita Prefecture, and the official site apparently describes it as "a luxury resort hotel overlooking the stunning views of Beppu." Rooms come in three types—Suite (up to 212 square meters, apparently), Club InterContinental Room, and Classic—so it seems like you can choose quite a spacious room if you want.

Standard check-in is at 3:00 PM, and check-out is at 11:00 AM, apparently. It seems late check-out may be arranged for an extra fee depending on the situation. Specific pricing information was limited, but there apparently are special plans for extended stays, such as a breakfast-included plan offering up to 35% off for three consecutive nights.

Reservations can apparently be made through the booking form on the official site or by phone. It also seems there's a dedicated page where you can check, change, or cancel existing reservations.

A 212-square-meter suite... I'm starting to think that might be bigger than my own place. As someone who likes staying indoors, it seems like the room alone could be more than enough to keep me satisfied.

Checking the Baths, Restaurants, and Other Facilities I'm Curious About

As for baths, the hotel has a large communal bath and an open-air bath, but apparently there are currently no private/reservable baths or family baths. The official FAQ apparently states clearly, "There are no private or family baths. Only the large communal bath and open-air bath are available." That said, there was also a mention of a family bath rate for day-use guests—20,000 yen for the first hour (plus 10,000 yen for each additional hour)—and since I couldn't find the specific plan name or usage conditions on the official site, this point left me a bit curious.

  • Restaurants: There are four venues—Elements, Atelier, Musui, and The Lounge/Aqua—and all apparently require reservations
  • Room types: Apparently there are three types—Suite, Club InterContinental Room, and Classic
  • Extended-stay plans: There seems to be a breakfast-included plan offering up to 35% off for three consecutive nights, among others

Having four reservation-only restaurants makes me feel like there's quite a wide range of ways to spend your time during a stay.

Summarizing the Access Options

This facility is apparently located in the Kannawa Onsen area of Beppu City, Oita Prefecture. Looking into this on the assumption that I wouldn't use a car, I found that there's apparently a free shuttle bus running between the west exit of JR Beppu Station and the hotel. It runs from 10:30 AM to 4:30 PM from the hotel, and from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM from Beppu Station, apparently running once an hour each way. However, capacity is limited to 6 passengers, and priority is given to hotel guests' reservations, so for day-use visitors, it seems the shuttle can only be used if there are open seats on the day of use. Advance reservations are apparently recommended for groups of 4 or more.

Besides the shuttle bus, Kamenoi Bus operates several route bus lines from Beppu Station, and it seems you can ride for 520 yen one way. By taxi, it's apparently about 20 minutes from Beppu Station for around 3,000 yen, or about 50 minutes from Oita Airport for around 15,000 yen. It also seems possible to arrange a taxi in advance through the hotel. By car, it's apparently about 40 minutes from Oita Airport via the Beppu Interchange on the Higashi-Kyushu Expressway, plus another 10 minutes or so from there, and there's also apparently a route using the Beppu Bay SA smart interchange (ETC only).

Rakuten Mobile Signal Conditions

When I checked this facility's location using Rakuten's official "My Area Connectivity Simulation" tool, it didn't show a normal result—instead, it displayed a fallback message along the lines of "Currently undergoing temporary maintenance." It seems this kind of message can appear when no matching data is found for the address in question, so in this case, the overall result came back as unknown.

Since I couldn't confirm a signal result this time, I'm sharing that as is. If you're actually considering staying here, it might be a good idea to check the official tool yourself as well, just to be safe.

I guess not getting a result is a result in itself, in a way. It made me realize that it's especially in situations like this that checking things with your own eyes beforehand really matters.

Wrapping Up

To sum it up, ANA InterContinental Beppu Resort & Spa left me with the impression of being a luxury resort hotel with a large communal bath overlooking stunning views of Beppu and multiple restaurants, offering a real sense of getting away from everyday life. Given the spaciousness of the rooms and the range of restaurants, it also seems well-suited to a trip focused on relaxing indoors.

On the other hand, as for Rakuten Mobile signal conditions, the official tool didn't display a result, so the outcome remains unknown. Since I wasn't able to confirm a rough sense of the connectivity at this time, I'll share that as is too. If you're concerned about connectivity during your stay, it seems like a good idea to check the official tool yourself beforehand.
