I Looked Into Kijihiki Kogen Camp Site

I've been running this blog by researching campsites and day-trip hot springs one by one and writing them up as articles. I've honestly lost count of how many I've covered by now, but I'm still out there looking for the next facility, same as always.

One place that caught my eye this time was Kijihiki Kogen Camp Site. I came across information saying you can apparently see all the way to Mt. Hakodate, the Tsugaru Strait, and Mt. Komagatake from there, and even as an indoor type who isn't actually going to visit in person, just looking at the photos and materials was enough to lift my mood a little, so I decided to look into it.

The Short Version

It looks like a campsite with scenery on a scale that feels distinctly Hokkaido — from near the summit of Mt. Kijihiki, you can apparently see all the way to Mt. Hakodate, the Tsugaru Strait, Mt. Komagatake, and Lake Onuma.
As for the Rakuten Mobile signal, the official tool showed an overall rating of AA, and since this is based on actual measurement data, it seemed like a reassuring point.

I've summarized the details below.

What Kind of Place Is Kijihiki Kogen Camp Site?

This is a campsite located in Hokuto City, Hokkaido, and its biggest feature seems to be its location near the summit of Mt. Kijihiki. During the day, you get a view stretching out to Mt. Hakodate, the Tsugaru Strait, Mt. Komagatake, and Lake Onuma, and apparently at night you can see the stars, with a sea of clouds sometimes visible under the right conditions. There also seems to be an observation deck right next to the Kijihiki Kogen area, so I got the impression that a lot of people come to enjoy both camping and the scenery together.

As for the operating season, based on what I found at the time of research, it runs from mid-April to the end of October, with check-in available from 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM and check-out from 6:30 AM to 11:00 AM. The entrance gate apparently closes at night (9:00 PM to 6:30 AM), so if you're planning to arrive or leave late at night, it might be worth keeping that in mind.

On the topic of fees, a bungalow reportedly costs 2,130 yen per night, plus a lodging tax of 100 yen per person per night. Tent sites are set at 320 yen per night for tents accommodating 6 people or fewer, and 530 yen per night for tents accommodating 7 or more. Bungalows apparently require a reservation, while tent sites don't, so if you'd like to show up on the day without planning ahead, a tent site might be the way to go. It seems reservations and inquiries can also be made by phone.

Hearing that there's a view all the way to Lake Onuma near the summit really makes me want to sit in a chair and just gaze out at it, even as an indoor type like me. I haven't actually been there, of course, but just reading through the materials was enough to make me feel like I'd climbed it myself.

Facilities and Points to Check About Bringing Pets

Let me organize a few points about the facilities.

  • Bungalows: apparently 12 units are set up, each accommodating 7 people
  • Tent sites: up to 100 tents can be pitched, and it seems around 10 of those spots can be used as car sites
  • Cooking area: there are 2 locations, and apparently 3 simple charcoal stoves (for 12 people each) are also set up
  • Restrooms: there are apparently 2 locations
  • Shower room: located inside the management building, with 3 stalls each for men and women, usable for 100 yen per 5 minutes
  • Wi-Fi: apparently available free of charge from the center of the multipurpose plaza out to around the bungalow area
  • Fireworks: it seems you can enjoy hand-held fireworks in a designated area until 9:00 PM, but aerial fireworks and anything that makes a loud noise are prohibited
  • Trash: there are no trash cans on site, so taking your garbage home with you is the basic rule

As for bringing pets, while they're apparently not allowed inside the bungalows, it seems you can bring them anywhere within the campsite as long as they're kept on a leash at all times. There also seem to be rules in place such as preventing excessive barking, taking waste home with you, and not brushing your pet on site, so if you're considering bringing your dog along, it might be worth checking the details in advance. Using generators or things like karaoke that produce loud noise is also apparently prohibited, which gave me the impression that they place a lot of value on keeping the environment quiet.

Rakuten Mobile Signal Conditions

I checked this facility's location using the official "My Area Communication Simulation" tool, and the overall rating came back as "AA." Since this is the result I got straight from the official tool, I'll just share it here as is.

Given that this is a highland area up in the mountains, I was a bit worried about the signal conditions, but with an AA rating, it looks like a relatively good coverage area. That said, signal conditions can vary depending on the device and the time period, so if you're concerned, it might be reassuring to check the official tool yourself as well.

Honestly, when I heard it was a campsite up in the mountains, I braced myself for the signal to be pretty rough, so getting an AA rating was a happy discovery while researching this. As someone who uses Rakuten Mobile myself, finding results like this is a relief.

Wrapping Up

To sum up again, my impression of Kijihiki Kogen Camp Site is that of a campsite whose biggest appeal is the scenery — the view stretching out to Mt. Hakodate, the Tsugaru Strait, Mt. Komagatake, and Lake Onuma from near the summit of Mt. Kijihiki. Both bungalows and tent sites are available, and the fact that facilities like shower rooms and Wi-Fi are in place also seems like an easy point for first-time visitors to check ahead of time.

The Rakuten Mobile signal also came back with an AA rating, so it struck me as a place that's easy to picture in advance, connectivity included. For anyone looking for the kind of scenery that's unique to Hokkaido's highlands, this might be a place worth keeping on the list.
