I Looked Into Hotel Nankaiso
2026-09-29

I've been continuing this series where I gradually look into hot spring inns that are mainly for overnight stays, here on this blog. Beyond just campsites and day-trip hot springs, I thought it might be interesting to occasionally take a "hotel-cation" style detour and look into the inn itself, so I put together this write-up.
This time I looked into "Hotel Nankaiso," located in Shirahama, Minamiboso City, Chiba Prefecture. Since I don't drive, the first thing that caught my eye was that it apparently has its own private hot spring source and a free shuttle bus from Tateyama Station.
This inn left me with the impression of a place that's easy to visit even without a car, since you can enjoy sodium chloride spring water from their own private source in two large baths, and there's a free shuttle bus from Tateyama Station.
The Rakuten Mobile signal came back as a "C" rating, so if you rely heavily on connectivity, it might be worth checking in advance.
I've laid out the details below.
What Kind of Place Is Hotel Nankaiso
Hotel Nankaiso is an inn located in Shirahama, Minamiboso City, Chiba Prefecture, and it appears to be operated by the HMI Hotel Group. It seems the name was written slightly differently across sources at some point in the past, but currently it's presented as "HOTEL NANKAISO."
The rooms come in quite a wide range: a 10-tatami Japanese-style room, a 10-tatami corner room with a nice view, a 12-tatami Japanese-style room, a Japanese-Western style room, a Western-style twin, a Western-style triple, a Western-style quad, and connecting rooms—eight room types in total, apparently 99 rooms overall, which is quite a large scale. All rooms are apparently Wi-Fi enabled and non-smoking, which felt like a nice point for someone like me who tends to stay indoors and wants to relax online in the room.
Check-in starts at 3 PM and check-out is by 10 AM, which seems like a fairly standard flow for this kind of inn. As for pricing, the official website lists plan names (for example, a standard plan featuring a seasonal vegetable buffet with popular grilled seafood, an early-bird discount plan, and a plan just for consecutive nights), but it seems you need to go through to the booking site to see actual prices. Reservations can apparently be made through the official website's online booking link, member login, or by phone (connecting rooms apparently require a phone reservation).

99 rooms is a bigger scale than I expected, honestly. Just hearing about that seasonal vegetable buffet is already making me a little hungry.
Checking Out the Private Hot Spring and In-House Facilities
The hot spring at this inn apparently draws from their own private source called the Shirahama Nojima hot spring, with a sodium chloride spring quality and a water temperature of 19 degrees. There are two large baths, called "Kudori no Yu" and "Shirahama no Yu." Kudori no Yu is apparently known for its abundant water volume—a benefit of having its own private source—and for a historic backstory involving large surrounding rocks. Shirahama no Yu is said to be passed down as a "beauty bath," and is described as having benefits for fatigue recovery, muscle pain, joint pain, neuralgia, and women's health issues.
The baths are open from 3 PM to midnight, and again the next morning from 5:30 AM to 9:30 AM, with the men's and women's bath areas apparently swapping in the morning. I couldn't find any mention of day-trip bathing, so it seems these baths are positioned for overnight guests only.
- Bath amenities: shampoo, conditioner, body soap, facial cleanser, comb, razor, shower cap, toner, lotion, cotton swabs, hair dryer, and more are apparently provided
- Baby-friendly features: a baby crib and booster chair are available, and baby items can apparently be borrowed from the front desk
- Usage notes: guests with tattoos and those who are excessively intoxicated apparently cannot use the baths, and per health department guidance, bringing food, drinks, magazines, etc. into the bath area is prohibited
- Amenities: face towels, bath towels, shampoo, conditioner, body soap, toothbrushes, hairbrushes, razors, yukata, and slippers seem to be provided, though under the Plastic Resource Circulation Act, certain amenity items are apparently only provided on the first night of your stay
- Room facilities: apparently include a TV, phone, tea set, refrigerator, and safe
I couldn't find any mention of private baths, so it seems the bathing options are limited to the two large baths. If privacy is a priority for you, it might be worth checking on this in advance.
Looking Into Access From Tateyama Station
Since I don't drive, how to get to this inn was the thing I was most curious about. From what I found, there's a free shuttle bus for overnight guests only, which requires advance reservation, running at 2:40 PM from JR Tateyama Station and 9:45 AM from the hotel. If you want to use it, you apparently need to call and reserve by the day before.
If the shuttle timing doesn't work for you, there's also a route where you take the JR Kanto Bus bound for Awa-Shirahama from Tateyama Station, get off at "Nojimasaki Todai-guchi," and walk about 5 minutes. There are also highway buses—the "Boso Nanohana" from the Tokyo area and the "Nanso Satomi" from the Chiba area—that run to the Awa-Shirahama Bus Terminal, from which you may be able to use the free shuttle as well (apparently you need to contact them in advance with your arrival time). If you're driving, the route goes via the Aqua-Line or the Keiyo Road from Kisarazu onto the Tateyama Expressway, then via national roads from the Tomiura interchange. Parking is apparently free for both cars and motorcycles.

Having a free shuttle available even from the highway bus stop was really reassuring info for someone like me without a car. I just need to remember that advance contact is required.
Rakuten Mobile Signal Conditions
I checked the location of this facility (the Shirahama area of Minamiboso City) using the official "My Area Connectivity Simulation" tool, and the overall rating came back as "C." I'm just sharing this rating as-is, based on what showed up in the tool.
Since the result was a C rating, if you plan on using data frequently during your stay, it might be reassuring to check in advance. Since all rooms are apparently Wi-Fi enabled, it seems like a good idea to plan on relying mainly on Wi-Fi while inside the building.

Seeing that C rating honestly made my shoulders drop a bit. But having Wi-Fi in every room feels like a saving grace. For someone like me who depends on connectivity, that was important information.
Wrapping Up
Putting it all together again, Hotel Nankaiso left me with the impression of being a place where you can enjoy hot spring water from its own private source in two large baths, with a free shuttle from Tateyama Station and connections via highway bus as well, making it a place worth considering even without a car. With eight room types across 99 rooms, there are plenty of options, and with meal plans like the seasonal vegetable buffet available too, it also gave off a vibe of being a place where you could really settle in and enjoy the stay itself.
On the other hand, since the Rakuten Mobile signal came back as a C rating, if connectivity is a concern for you, it's probably worth checking in advance. If you're curious, it might be easiest to just check the actual rating yourself using the official Rakuten Mobile tool.
